Hi all--I have about 2,500 miles on my Insight EX. So far I have been really disappointed in the low MPG. I hover around 35 in the city and on the one road trip I took I never got above 40. This seems quite low compared to what I'm reading on this forum.
Also--does anyone notice a hesitation or subtle "bucking" as the car accelerates out of a full stop? Again--this seems wrong--not to mention annoying.
I'm wondering if I'm driving wrong or if I need to bring it in to have it looked at.
Are you in Econ mode? How are your scores at the end of your trips? Are you staying in the economy bands on the displays?
If you are at a red light and auto-stop has the engine shut down, you should be able to release the brake, let the engine start, and then push the gas down...all in one smooth action.
The insight has an extremely high variable mpg determined by countless factors. Tire pressure, acceleration and deceleration, rain, wind, stop-go traffic, running A/C, weight, and many others. Try to experiment with your car using the MID display that will tell you how to drive it effeciently.
Also, the chugging sensation that you get from pressing the gas after a stop is just the nature of the CVT and how it works.
Thanks for the responses. I always drive in econ mode--but it is super hot here in Atlanta. Maybe that has something to do with the low MPG. I confess I haven't checked the tire pressure since I bought the car. I'll do that.

Your car sounds exactly like mine does at around 5000 miles. 35 mpg city, but if I nurse it carefully I can get 50+ mpg on the highway.
The bucking is normal, especially in stop and go traffic. Unfortunately the transmission/IMA integration on this car is just really lacking in refinement. To me, it almost feels like somebody is driving a car witha a manual tranny who sucks at using a clutch.
I've just turned 5,000 miles on the EX I purchased in the middle of April. This car is used in mostly stop and go traffic in a beach town. Occasionally, we'll get to go 4 or 5 miles without a stop sign or traffic light. Things have dramatically improved, from a mileage perspective, just on the last tank. I'm now averaging in the high 40 mpg range. Guess it just took a bit of time to get all the moving parts in the engine to operate smoothly. Also, it's always in economy mode, with a periodic spurt of "S" thrown in to keep the a/c on while I have pets in the car.

Normal? I feel a little bit of that when the engine is cold, but I wouldn't call that normal.

The bucking has been with this car since it's birth.. I'm on 42,000 miles and it's almost lessened a bit. It's funny it was a lot more jerky when I first bought it. I heard this is fixed with the 2011 model (go figure) If it's really hot out your MPG is being sucked down by the AC.

That would be inaccurate. It exists in the 2011 model.
It is annoying, but in my case I'm hardly ever at a stop sign or stop light so it's largely irrelevant. It probably would drive me bat$hit if I lived in a city.
It's done it since mile 1 on the odo. It's how it is.
