My gas door is missing a spring mechanism that allows it to push out for gas-ups and also to be pushed in to be secured. How would I go about figuring out what part number I need so I can order it? I'm sure it's little more than ordering the part and slipping it on. I've been having to lightly pry it out each time I gas up, and I'd prefer to just get it working at this point.
As for how it went missing, I was hit from behind almost a year ago, causing extensive rear damage and almost enough to total it. I think that may have had something to do with it because it wasn't long after I got my car back that I noticed this was an issue.

I don't see a separate item for the spring and am guessing it's internal to the pusher mechanism. Perhaps your problem is binding and not a missing spring. If it was my car I would investigate the old pusher mechanism for proper function before ordering a new one.
As I said, maybe something popped out after my accident. Maybe the weather affected the spring (hot to cold, back to hot, etc) and I didn't notice it falling to the ground during a gas up. I'm not sure; all I know is that it isn't there anymore and using a dull pocket knife to slightly pry it open isn't good and I need to figure out what part I need.
Call your insurance company if your car isn't fixed right. Fixing it on your own is letting them get away with not fufilling their responsibility. I had the insurance company pay for additional repairs made to my truck almost a year after the accident.

Have you played with the existing parts remaining? It "looks" like the functional parts of the pogo stick are there. Can you push on it and make it pop in and out? It looks like the top cap came off of the push lifter. If you can't adapt it to work, you'll need the part mrkcohen suggested.

I'm not entirely positive that it was as the result of the accident I was involved in. I was laid off right after I got my car back and on the bench for 6 weeks, so I didn't fill up my gas tank for a while.
Also, I'd rather gouge my eyes than deal with insurance over a part that is this cheap.

Yeah, its pretty much the top cap that came off. That little rod will still push in and out most of the time, but its not a very fluid motion.

If it's just the cap I wouldn't sweat it but if there are other accident related issues I would make them make it right.

My latch failed soon after I first got my car. I know when I use to go out to my car it was common to see the gas lid popped open. Now I use the key to pop it open as it sits flush. At least it sits flush.

You might could compromise a cap with a hot glue gun and some plastic piece of something....perhaps a kids toy.
Or you could spend the $12 and get a new one and either rob the cap or replace the whole thing. If you have to get to the backside of that thing, I think you have to remove a screw, open the door slightly and spin it 90 degrees counterclockwise to remove the whole door and neck surround assembly.
