The truely obsessive do change the filter. The maintenance minder gives codes fore what service is due. Once the oil life drops below 15% the message changes to "service due soon" with letter and number codes. The third time that happened on our Insight it said A123

A=oil change
1=tire rotation
2=replace air cleaner, pollen filter, inspect drive belt
3=replace transmission fluid

basically an old fashion 30k service only now days we don't do spark plugs or touch the coolant.

Even a regular Honda automatic has a 45k trans service interval.

By the way, wasn't there some strategy for dealing with this behavior reported in a thread here? I remember someone experiencing this while moving his insight around his condo complex to wash it. It was cold and the speed bumps and slow speeds made it very jerky. Turn off the eco? Move to sport mode on the trans?

I experience this since day one as well. I had the dealer checked twice but they told me that it's normal so I learn to deal with it.

Other than going for sports mode, I turn the defroster on with 1 bar and AC off so it doesn't suck up hp. The defroster also disables the auto stop. I use that when I know that I'm going to encounter many stop signs. Easier than going to sports mode for my personal taste. Hope it helps.

Thanks folks. I just got used to it. It does usually go away, or mostly go away, after the car warms up. The car seems to like to jerk around a lot anyways so it's really not a big deal. Definitely drives different than a non hybrid!

Hi.

My car has the same problem too.
I bought my Insight two months ago and it had 30k kilometers driven.
What I noticed is the car shudders in start ups and when u hit the gas pedal back after deceleration. It happens around 20 km/h. when it is happening, the rpm hand is bouncing. quite noticibly between 1500 and 2000 rpm.
I've done everything I could to solve the problem but still yet to be solved.
Its rather hard to accept that this is normal.
What can the problem be? Engine problem or transmission problem?
Thank you everyone.

I ended up changing the fluid, well what I could without flushing it completely. If I remember right, opening the drain plug lets around 3.5 qts out. Just replace that and if you are at all in the same situation as I was, it will fix the problem. I still notice it on a rare occasion a little now, but I almost have to be looking for it. Good luck!

I still have the same problem but I had already gotten used to it. It's pretty cold lately here in LA so that might be a factor. I did have a fluid change a month ago and it had improved somewhat but still noticeable. I think that it is the nature of the CVT. I've been telling others that I'm gonna get rid of this car for so long but with a blink of an eye, I've already driven it for over 32K miles now lol. It does serve its purpose despite the obvious problems. I'm still getting 40mph and the car still feels structurally solid. Just that the drivetrain has problems. News came out that Honda had finally come out with a hybrid similar to Toyota's where battery is now strong enough to move the car from complete stop. But needless to say this is my last hybrid.

Thank you everyone.
I live in Yangon, Myanmar and the weather is pretty hot here.
I have changed the trans fluid and even cleaned the fluid particle filter which is inside
the transmission case.
again the problem is still not solved.
In our country, the reconditioned Japan used cars are mostly used and
brand new are rarely seen due to taxes and government's restrictions.
I also have another vehicle named Toyota Belta(japanese domestic) known as Toyota Vios in other countries which is also equipped with CVT.
Unlike my Insight, the Belta operates very smoothly. Not even a little shudder under every driving conditions.

There is a procedure in the HDS service tool to readjust the start clutch that requires the special computer to readjust.

Have you tried unplugging the EGR? Sometimes the egr can cause that too. In that case it needs to be cleaned.

Default Have the dealer check your IMA sofware/run a diagnostic

I purchased a 2010 I2 a few weeks back, and had the same issue.
I read on other forums that this might be an IMA issue.
I took the car in to my local dealer and mentioned the problem to him.
I also mentioned that I would like to have diagnostics done on the car, and have the hybrid system and IMA checked out. They checked it out, and identified it as some sort of a computer failure that manages the IMA. They fixed it through a software upgrade. The problem seems to have gone away now, and Ifeel like I am getting better fuel economy as well. I will continue to monitor is closely.
I would suggest go to the dealer, describe the problem, and ask specifically for a hybrid system and IMA software diagnostics check, and request to apply any software update. There are no recalls about this, but there are TSBs that they have, hence they might tell you that your car does not have any pending update, but insist on having the diagnostics done.
They initially told me that there would be a $62 charge, which I agreed to. But they later did not charge me anything since they found the computer issue with IMA that was covered under warranty. Hope this helps.
