These are directions to assemble a dog harness. The harness will work for almost any size dog and will add a reasonable amount of safety during hard breaking and mild collisions. This harness will also keep a dog from disturbing the driver but still allow it reasonable comfort and mobility.

Purchase 4 dog lead type clips, 2 cargo webbing type straps and a standard dog seatbelt harness. The seatbelt harness can be purchased at a pet store. The clips and straps can be purchased from a hardware or home supply store.

The diagram image shows how every thing is put together. You don't need to have the clips if you intend to keep this harness installed almost all the time. Even for permanent installation the clips allow easier access to the cargo compartment lid. I only use mine on weekends and quickly unclip it for weekday use. I also tuck a couple of towels under the rear mat to protect the paint on the trunk from getting scratched while the dog enters the car and I also have one between the cargo area and the seats. My dog often rests her paws over this area and I imagine it would easily get wear. Similarly, a rear cargo mat is a real necessity when you have a dog.

ASSEMBLY:

1. Attach the 4 clips, one to each of the rear hatch rings.
2. Run the lengths of the straps through kiddy corner clips as shown in the diagram. Pass the straps through the dog harness loop between the two clips.
3. Run each of the straps through the tightening buckle of the other straps.
4. Keep this all fairly loose.

ADDING THE DOG:

You may wish to add towels or blankets to help protect the front and rear of the cargo area.
1. Bring the dog onto the deck area.
2. Attach the dog harness the standard way described with the packaging instructions. Having the two long straps loose will help you put the harness on the dog.
3. Have the dog lie down in the middle of the cargo area.
4. Tighten the straps at each of the buckle areas watching not to snag any of the dog’s paws. The tighter the straps the safer the harness set up. The dog will still be able to move slightly and even lie down. Don't put unrealistically high amounts of torque on the buckles as this will put unnecessary strain on the Insight cargo loop rings and on the straps and clips.

**The seatbelt harness must be installed as though you were going to use it with a seatbelt. The straps go through the harness at the chest part of the harness not at the seatbelt loop on the back. This setup keeps the dog's chest down on the cargo deck. The tighter straps prevent any of the dog paws getting caught under the straps. Do not install the harness backwards with the seatbelt loop at the chest. The harness will not be as effective nor will it be very comfortable for the dog**

**Do not leave the dog in this harness unattended and never leave your dog in any car for more than a few minutes. Heat can build up very quickly inside a vehicle**
