5 Best Selling Electric Cars
May 29, 2015 - 8:18 AM - by

There are an even dozen electric vehicles (EVs) offered in the U.S. and their sales range from quite respectable to so little as to give fodder to critics.

As a type of vehicle, EVs are a slim minority of the U.S. sales total at 0.40 percent but they have an outsized reputation and more EVs are pending, including the next generation of higher-range-for-the-buck models in a couple years.

The current crop has grown over the past four years and been the topic of many news reports, features, and while lots of people have heard of them, there remains not a little confusion over them as well in some quarters.

A lot of talk is made over their comparatively limited range and “range anxiety” but a substantial number of anecdotes attest to the truth that once some people dive in, the range worries take care of themselves and they adjust to live within limitations.

Even so, automakers themselves have not all been as gung ho as Tesla in proliferating this new kind of vehicle that could in time fully compete with their primary products.

Around half of the EVs sold are what are pejoratively called “compliance cars” to comply with California Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV)

6 Hybrid Cars That Pay You Back the Soonest
May 12, 2015 - 12:26 PM - by

With the relative decline in U.S. gas prices are hybrid cars still worth the money?

The answer depends on what is important to you, but the top 6 hybrids that pay back any price surcharges the soonest still do so relatively quickly even at today’s prices at the pump.

According to the U.S. EPA, payback for the worst is under three years, and the best is zero years. This is based on $2.66 per gallon estimated for regular fuel, and $3.05 for premium and factoring 15,000 annual miles, 55 percent city, 45 percent highway.

At this writing these fuel prices are precisely in line with AAA’s Fuel Gauge average U.S. gas price report, so the EPA is spot on there.

Another variable that can change the results will be if you load your car up with options. As it is, the federal government compares respective hybrid models with nearest non-hybrid counterparts at base MSRP.

Of course hybrids exist for reasons other than just saving money. Their reduced fuel use is better for energy security, the environment, is convenient when you don’t have to stop to fill up as often, and lower consumption is simply less wasteful. And, it’s a hedge against if fuel prices do go back up.

However, it’s also true not all hybrids do “pencil out” with shorter

Top 5 Cheapest Hybrid Cars
May 08, 2015 - 12:33 PM - by

With more than three-dozen hybrid cars on offer in the U.S. today and at least a dozen under the national average new car price of $33,560, consumers have plenty of choices.

If price is your priority we’ll give you the shortlist , but bear in mind total ownership and operational costs are part of a sound decision.

News these days is gas is cheap so hybrid sales are down. On the flip side, motivated dealerships may be willing to move on price for that reason, and if a particular model is aging in its product life cycle.

Such may be the case with today’s snapshot, and don’t forget if – or when – gas prices go back up, a thrifty running car is a hedge against increases. The higher gas prices go, the faster a low-consumption car stands to pay back.

Why Won’t My Car Start?
May 05, 2015 - 2:14 PM - by

Without a doubt, every owner dreads the moment when their car won’t start. What should you do? Who should you call? Can you fix it yourself? Here’s a list with ten common reasons why cars don’t start up and what you can do about it.

'The first step is to define the no start' said Joe Spadafora, certified instructor at Universal Technical Institute’s Exton, Pennsylvania campus. Spadafora spent the majority of his career in working in the service department of several dealerships and receiving factory training from GM. He’s certified as a Master Technician and certified by Chrysler as a Dodge Viper technician . He also holds certifications from Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Lexus and Scion as well, so if there’s something wrong with your car, chances are he’s seen it before.

To diagnose the reason your car isn’t starting, you need to pay attention to happening when you turn the key. 'Does the engine crank but not actually start or, when you turn the key, does literally nothing happen?' he said. 'In a customer’s eyes, the following two options are the same because both create a scenario that results in the vehicle’s failure to run.'

While the two situations might seem similar, they have very different meanings that are important to a mechanic and can signal

Safest Green Cars Under $35k
Apr 28, 2015 - 8:54 AM - by

Last week J.D. Powers’ U.S. Tech Choice Survey reported respondents overwhelmingly said they wanted advanced crash mitigation technologies and it so happens these are required to make the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) list.

Our list culled from the latest IIHS data thus merges two desirable “technologies” – electrified powertrains that save gas and cut emissions as well as crash avoidance systems offering greater chance of personal safety.

Two of the listed vehicles are hybrid variants within broader model ranges that together scored TSP+, but being heavier because of battery and hybrid systems, they may even do slightly better in some kinds of accidents according to IIHS Vice President of Communications Russ Rader.

“All other things being equal, bigger, heavier vehicles are more protective in crashes than smaller, lighter ones,” said Rader. “Similarly, in keeping with the laws of physics, people riding in a hybrid are better protected in a crash than people riding in the same non-hybrid model. Batteries add weight which improves protection in collisions.”

Two Measures of Safety

Each year the IIHS evaluates vehicles for 1) crashworthiness – how well the airbag- and crumple-zone equipped reinforced structure of the
