Default Buying Advice 2011 EX VS 2012 EX

Hi all.

So I've been looking into getting an insight as a replacement for my 2004 Element. I've come across two models that both drive well.

The first is a 2011 EX with 39,000 miles. It is one owner and is very clean. Priced around $10k

The second is a 2012 EX with 59,000 miles. This one is 2 owner, and was purchased CPO. From what I've gathered the CPO warranty is easily transferable.

My concern is, I've read some issues with the 2012 having some issues with using oil.

If you were in my position, assuming all other things being equal with the cars, which one would you pick?

2011. The 2012s have a known oil consumption/ring deterioration problem. The 2011s don't have it.

ditto ... 2010 & 2011's seem untouched by the oil problem thus far

Doesn't the 2012 have a superior (for aero) rear bumper design?

Also yeah the ring problem is more serious of course, but IIRC 2013 and 2014 do NOT have that problem right?

I think the problem is is 2012-2013 MY cars. At least in the US.

Definitely go with the 2011. No worries about engine issues, only 39k and one owner? Doesn't get much better.

Thanks everyone.

I was heavily leaning towards the 2011 and you made my decision much easier.

I'll be picking it up later today and I'm excited to put some miles on it.

Besides checking the 12V and getting the CVT fluid changed, is there anything else I should look into doing right away? Breaks, tires, etc are all pretty new.

Check out the engine air filter, it and the cabin filter may not have been changed. Other than our excessive CVT fluid change schedule, these cars do not require a lot of maintenance. A sticking front brake pad can mean front brake replacement early. Otherwise, because of regenerative braking, the front pads can last a very long time. One member reported 140k before needing pads, but I think to do that one would need to "service" by lubing the moving parts. There are 8! Ridiculously expensive spark plugs to replace sometime after 100k, but some folks (including me) are just leaving them in past due.

Also, do check the tire pressures. Many of us run the tires much higher than the door label recommendation. Do report what tires are on it once you get it. The original equipment Dunlops were horrible. A new set of tires can make the Insight into a very different car.

And remember this: these cars did not hold their value. Killer deals are available. On the used market, the prospect of having to replace the IMA battery freaks out used car buyers. Use that knowledge to your advantage. Lowball all offers.
