Exclamation Having to turn car off and on to reset CVT - common?

I was in stop-and-go LA freeway traffic the other day. If you don't know LA, the city is "flat" but there are very very subtle grades (coming down the 405 for example). On a slight downward slope, I brake early so that the Insight cuts engine, and I can slide forward with the car in Auto-Stop (INFINITE MPGs!).

There was one stretch where there was a slightly more severe downward slope but traffic is not going fast, so I leave my foot on the brake pedal to stay in Auto-Stop. The car gets to somewhere over 10 MPH (MORE INFINITE MPGs!) with no engine power. Suddenly, the engine kicks in (due to the speed) but climbs to 2000-3000 RPM and doesn't come down. I put my foot down on the accelerator and the revs just keep climbing even though I'm only doing 15 MPH. It feels exactly like I'm in L even though it's clearly in D. I shift into S and L and N and back to D multiple times and there's no difference. Interstate highway stuck in a low gear ratio is not good, so I pull over to the shoulder, turn off the ignition, turn it back on, get back into traffic, and, thank god, it's back to normal.

Has anyone else had an experience like this?

This makes me pretty dang worried about my CVT. If at 95,000 miles it's having problems like this, who knows if it will last another 100,000 miles?

Did you by any chance look at the battery indicator in the MID?
Chances are that your prolonged staying in AutoStop drained the hybrid battery to where it decided a force recharge was imminent.

I have had some severe traffic jams in the last weeks and could prolong AutoStop for very long periods by switching all ventilation OFF, but there were short walking pace creeps in between that gently recharged the battery at idle revs.
I held AutoStop in an accident jam the other day, completely stopped; and after about 5 minutes the engine kicked in. Battery was not even past halfway down.

FWIW, keying off in a jam kills the AutoStop functionality until you've driven another 600 meters reaching at least 10 mph or so.

The Insight can go up to 50 mph/80 km/h on battery. But only for a very, very short distance. When you discharge the battery, a mandatory minimum recharge is performed. Not to a full charge, but just a minimum charge. If you continue driving, then a full charge will be performed. But while you at rest or in a crawl below 16 km/h, you will only get a minimum charge. Still, you will experience a higher than usual rev to facilitate charge.

I agree that this has nothing to do with the CVT and everything to do with the IMA. While I have never experienced this forced recharge, autostop in stop & go traffic drives me crazy and I shift to S to keep it from happening. (And to keep the A/C going) While maximizing fuel enconomy is admirable, it can be penny wise and pound foolish. LA freeways are a poor place to try to do so. The freeway and an Insight? That should be suffering enough!

I also wonder if your Insight ever got any of itís software updates. There were three before the one we owners got a letter about.
One effected how autostop worked.
One effected how the CVT engaged.
One effected how the forced recharge worked.

The one we got a letter about had something to do with the IMA utilization,
maximizing the battery pack life.

Do search and read the old threads about software updates.
Then beg (and probably pay unless never done) a Honda dealer to hook up your Insight to the computer in the service area to check/download.
