Hello everyone,
I just want to buy a Honda insight from 2010(114.000km). I have driven the car and I liked it, but I have some concerns about it. The main concern is the ima battery. If it fails I will be scrued. I noticed that when I drove the car the battery indicator dropped very fast. I have driven between 35 and 47km/h to see if the car runs only on electrical power, and the entire battery was emptied in less than 1km. After that the charging was really fast. It's possible that the car was not driven in the past months. How can I check the battery or the capacity? It will be enough to drive the car several km to see if the capacity will improve? I am waiting for your advices. I wanted to go to the dealer but they can't help me until 5th August, and I want to buy the car in the next days. The car doesn't have any lights in the dashboard, and it runs very smooth. Do you know if there were any problems with the battery after 2010?

First, please put your location in your profile. Where matters.

Yes it is quite possible the IMA is weak from not being used. It is also possible to revive it by just using it. These Insights barely run on electricity alone. (unlike a Prius for instance) so that is not a good way to judge. AT 170,000km (70,836miles) it is still pretty young. I would be more worried about other things, like the CVT transmission that may never have had it's fluid changed. The 2010 and on IMA battery packs have not been a problem, but will eventually need replacing. The only ones we have had reported bad at this point are ones that have been damaged in rear end collisions. We also have had guys using Insights for Uber or Lyft and going over 200,000 miles (322,000km) without issue. It's all about use. My main warning to you would be to avoid a 2012 or 2013 model year as those have low friction piston rings that cause excessive oil consumption and foul the expensive spark plugs. In the US (and probably Canada) there is an official warranty extension to fix it. I don't know about other parts of the world. (and you didn't say where you are)

Hello. Thank you for your answer. Sorry, I forgot to mention my country. I am from Romania. The car had 2 owners, and since 2013 is in Romania where it had all services at the dealer. The CVT oil was changed at 100.000km by actual owner, but I don't know if it was changed previously. The transmission seems to work fine, I didn't notice anything wrong. Do you also know if all models have the low option on transmission? On the lever the car doesn't have the L, it stops at S. I tried the method where I pushed the paddles for more than 3 seconds but nothing happened. Now that I am thinking, I didn't try this in S, only in D 🙂. Maybe that's why didn't work. The price for this car is around 5000euros, so I think I will buy it and hope for the best. I really liked the way the car looks, and also how it runs. Also I have seen that used batteries are sold with 3-400euros in UK. Do you know if there are differences between batteries for RHD and LHD cars?

I have another question for you. How can I properly test the car by driving it? It's there any signs should I look for? Or if the car doesn't have any lights on the dashboard, it is enough? I already told you that the first thing I noticed was the so called recall of the battery. After I driven the car with a constant speed of 47km/h, the mid showed that I was using only electrical power, but the battery was emptied very very fast, and also after the battery charged also very fast. It will be enough to test the car on a longer distance? Maybe the battery will be charged more and this way I can see the real capacity. In how long time or km should the battery be charged if let's say that it is almost emptied?
