Default Opinions are like... The Chevy Volt?

Dudes and Dudettes:

I am starting to consider buying a fairly late-model, used Volt. Most of my driving is local, and I'd like a pure EV, but the cost and the fact that I take regular 300+ mile round trips into the wilds of Pennsyltucky discourage me from going that route. I'd really hate to run out of juice in some of those back hill woods and don't want the extra trouble of planning routes around charging stations.

I prefer a smaller vehicle with a lower sitting position, so no (mini) SUVs. I'm retired. As a result the $$$$ tax reduction doesn't mean very much to me.

Do any of you have direct experience with the Vol?. The couple people I know who have them love them. One guy commutes just within the electric range of the vehicle and tells me he spends 20 bucks every three months on fuel. But I don't really count either of them as tech- or car-people.

What do *you* think?

Okay....
Am I able to move this this there, or does that require a moderator? I cannot find an obvious button. Then, again, obvious things sort of slip past me.

$20 per month for gas, but electrical costs also count. It may or may not be more cost efficient depending on your cost of electricity.

Most people who have switched to the Volt seem to be quite pleased with the car.

I have a 2013 Volt and an Insight

For me the Volt is comfortable and reliable. I use it on trips when I need 3 seats.

A Volt works best for your situation, short normal drives with an occasional longer trip, a longer multiday trip is even more enjoyable if you can destination charge.

A Volt is cheaper than a Prius which means even if you live in an area with sky high electricity it can be used as a plain hybrid without much guilt.

Even in that scenario because gas prices vary a lot, EV is easier to hypermile and your maintenance is near zero on electricity
you will find it’s nice having the choice and EV is worthwhile most of the time, especially if you have solar or get free charging at local places.

The math as to which is cheaper is pretty easy so I won’t go into it here but see my attachment of a slow warm longer trip with the Volt, how you drive really affects the economics of the car

In cold weather the Volt is not very efficient but it is very convenient,
You will have to weigh the pros and cons.

My mother wants a Volt because she has a freak out going to the gas station and plugging in and preheating is easier to do.

Good Luck
Ryan

tomorrow I'm picking up my third Volt for lease. I've had a 2013 Gen1, a 2017 gen 2 and tomorrow will be a 2019. While we leased the gen 1 my wife would fill the gasoline about once every six-8 weeks since her work was 30 miles round trip. The average mpg for ~36k miles was 99 mpg. The next one was used more on the highway so the mileage was much less. I have a 220 V charger I installed and it makes charging twice as fast and half the cost. I've had no problems in the six years I've had Volts. I love the quietness and the acceleration. Our only issue is it's not as full 5 person vehicle. I do think the cargo area is quite large and I love the hatchback aspect with fold down seats because it can fit tons of stuff. The remark about cold weather is accurate. In the winter I lose about 30% distance, but with the gen2 it still gives me 38 miles. With the $7500 federal government rebate (ending for Volt 1 April) my monthly lease was reduced $200 so it is/was quite a deal. Highly recommend a gen2 for the reason it has a larger battery.

Default Volt

We leased our first Volt in 2012, then bought a 2014. We frequently drive longer distances, and the Volt meets all of our needs. I would recommend a Volt to anyone who does short trips, with occasional longer excursions. Very sad that GM is stopping production of the Volt. No doubt the Volt is too expensive to build. GM did a terrible job of promoting/advertising the Volt.

We have 2 insights both 2000 models and 2 volts (2012 and 2017). The volt is a very nice car and ours have been great usually only needing a fill up every 6 months to a year. The volt is a bigger car, more plush with features like navigation, auto braking, LED lights, Advanced Cruise Control etc while the insight is pretty basic. I still drive the insights for long trips as the volt is best for around town use, but if you need to drive a few hunders miles it can but at 35-40 mpg which is low compared to the Insight on the highway. The volts have been reliable and trouble free but then again they aren't even half the age of the insights. Have fun, Rick
