Default Teen driver mpg and ecomode

2011 Honda Insight LX 120.000 miles. Always driven in hot Florida with AC on and with ECO mode on.

I always get between 42 and 45 in typical suburban driving. Maybe 46 or 47 on highway with air off mostly. Never get below 39 or 40 unless laden with cargo and a bike rack on trailer ruining aerodynamics.

On rare occasion I let my teen son drive it, and with his lead foot he gets perhaps 36 or so.

Last time I lent ot it him not realizing ECO mode was turned off. He got 47mpg in city/suburban driving, much better than my mpg.

Is it possible eco mode causes worse mileage in city driving?

Or did my son some how become a less leadfooted driver?

Did you talk to your son about this?

He had no insight ( pardon the pun). In retrospect I think he was driving at a low traffic time of day and maybe that eliminated a lot of the stop and go. Also I always threaten him with bodily harm if he gets even a minor scratch from a shopping cart on it. That maybe gives him a gentler foot and better mpg even with ECO off.
