Default 12V Upgrade - Ballistic Battery

Anybody changed the 12V over to EVO2 or other compact / light weight battery?

Amperage: 9.2Amp/Hour
Burst Cranking Amps (5 sec @ 70 Degrees F): 480amps
Weight 3.5 lbs.

Seems like enough power for a start. My I2 is garage kept for a not so cold morning.

Interesting. Only 3.5 lbs... a little spendy, but very light. Need to hear from the Battery experts on this one.

I saw the last time I was in advance auto they sold a similar battery for 100 bucks for a motorcycle. I got an old lead acid battery laying around for a core charge. I may just take them up and do some battery hokie pokie myself. Put the group 51 from the insight in the sidekick. Put the group 24 deep cycle from the sidekick into a home made back up power supply for when the lights go out and put the lithium in the insight, but mount it in the trunk and to the 4th wire in the ima system.

I don't know why moving the battery to the rear sounds so cool but it would leave so much room under the hood for activities!!! ... On a real note I think that would be a cool mod to see .

I see you can get lithium batteries at advance auto in the small engine section. I may very well do this. I also see small agm cells in the battery section of walmart.

Either one should be a welcome upgrade as our car uses a charging circuit vs a constant charge of an alternator. I had purchased 2 agm deep cycle u1 cells for an electric wheelchair and played with them in the car for a while. 2 seemed counter productive, but one made a hell of a difference in IMA performance and a boost in mpg.

Yes, once the bat is in the trunk, that leaves room for a chemical intercooler and 3 gallon reserve.

Could 4 of the A123 batteries is series be used to replace the 12V battery? I think they can be found for around $25/each making a $100 pack.

These lithium battery pouches have been discussed on this forum a lot for their potential to be used in constructing a replacement IMA battery, but according to my math, 4 in series would be 13.2V nominal with a discharge current of 360A. The higher nominal voltage may be preferable to avoid overcharging the lithiums and possibly allow the DC-DC charging to be on a shorter amount of the time. Can anyone think of any problems that would arise from this setup? Would 4 of these fit in the battery compartment?

This looks possible. Perhaps you should bring the idea to them.

Thats why I look for off the shelf solutions. I think a motorcycle battery would be find since the car uses it to power the relays vs the actual starter. Now if you "modified" your insight to start the old fashion way, then Id look for an agm or some other battery type.

At that Ive looked at agm and other power sports batteries and seems they are much more sensitive and limited to operating temperatures in regards to heat vs a traditional lead acid starter battery. This would mean an agm of lithium motorcycle battery would need to be mounted in the trunk or somewhere in the passenger compartment.

I've had an 8 cell from Motorcycle Batteries - Welcome to RB batteries!Excellent products without the ridiculous prices. for a couple months working great (RB8M). At 1.2lbs it's pretty entertaining to see it sitting in the old battery box. I use the same battery in my 1000cc motocycle...and my 1000cc car haha.

Should be better overall as the resting voltage is higher than a lead acid and the self-discharge is much less. Of course with lithium, don't forget to turn off your head lights or you will not only drain the battery but likely ruin it also.
