It is not the same. It uses similar technology though, and it is possible to bypass the IMA system.

Keep in mind that you will not have assist or regen or auto stop, and if the engine is spinning slower than 1500 RPM, it is not making enough juice to charge the 12V battery. So the red battery light will come on. Also, if you spin it over about 3800 RPM, it will cut power to the DC-DC converter, and you will not be charging your 12V for 30 seconds or so.
It is a relatively easy job though. I just did this to a neighbor's car this morning in about fifteen minutes.
