Default 12v Starter Works When Jumped But Not With Key

Hey everyone I'm new here and working through my figuring out all the issues with my insight... This is on a 2000 MT Insight. I also have a 2001 MT Insight for parts.

I'm a little stuck with a 12v starter issue. My IMA battery is close to dead but still operable. Usually needs to start on 12V every morning but then after I'm out and about it starts on the IMA battery no problem.

So after getting it home one evening the next morning it won't start on 12V. I can hear the relay clicking when I turn the key, but I don't think the starter is getting energized... I followed the service manual troubleshooting procedure and when I jump the S terminal to the positive battery terminal it fires right up.

The manual says:

"Check for an open circuit or loose connections in the BLK/WHT wire and connectors between the starter cut relay and the ignition switch, and between the starter cut relay and the starter."

But I'm not sure how exactly to do that?? I pulled the starter cut off relay and swapped it to be sure that wasn't the issue. I tried using a multimeter to test continuity between the S terminal and the starter cut off relay and got no reading. Not sure how to diagnose further from here, although I know it's a good start to at least kind of know where the issue is! How can I test where the bad connection is? The wire from the S terminal seems to just go into a huge bundle...

Thanks for any help/advice )

Have your 12V battery load tested.

Why would a load test help me here? I've put this battery in my parts car and the battery was strong enough to start that one... It's also strong enough to start the car when jumping from the battery.

Well everyone wasn't kidding when they try to beat into your head: "CHECK YOUR GROUNDS. YOU CHECKED THEM? CHECK THEM AGAIN!" Shame on me. It was my ground to the starter, new cable and no problem.

For what it's worth this thread: add this site (I don't have enough posts to link)
/forums/honda-insight-forum-1st-gen-discussion/90201-12v-starter-issues-2.html

Is what got me to the conclusion that it MUST be a ground...

Thanks for watching this episode of idiots working on cars ask for help!

A bad ground will show symptoms of a bad 12V battery. Simplist things first.
If the 12V battery checks OK, then grounds would be next.
