Default What is this part?

This is screwed into the bottom of the driver side dash panel, below and left of the steering wheel. It has 2 wires with a quick connector. It became disconnected once and I drove without it for several months just to see if there was any difference - didn't notice any.

Anyone know what this is and its purpose?

Thanks Steve, everytime I get to feeling like an entirely too serious engineer, I have to watch that for laughts. It is a classic.

Have no idea what the part really is but seeing the turbo encabulator one more time made my day

Does the rectangular face move, as in push button?

Insight owners are an inovative bunch - could be almost anything.

I'll bet there is a wire out the back. Where does the wire go?

That is an aftermarket alarm system. Dealers put them in as a universal keyless entry system. (All the salesmen has to do is tap on the window and, if he has the corresponding fob on him, the vehicle will unlock. Once you agree to buy, the finance guy will try to sell you the functional alarm. If you refuse, they do something to deactivate it.
