Arrow Looking to Buy an Insight?

Hi there I am looking to buy a Honda insight and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to look for - regular faults, engine issues/checks?

Also I was wondering about the battery pack, if there is a way to test the capacity or if the recharging functions are working properly?

I am looking at the waranty info and this "Battery-pack limited warranty may vary" statement doesnt fill me with confidence. Any one have any info on this?

Hi, the Insight is relatively trouble free except for one biggie and a few details.

The biggie is the 2012 piston ring fouling which causes dramatic oil consumption.
This seems to occur only on US 2012's and early 2013's and is said to be a combination of bad gas and a change in piston ring design. No 2011 or earlier has this, nor do the later 2013's or 2014's have this - though it might be too early to consider that proven without doubt as there are not that many new high milers.

There are some issues with the transition between electric mode and gas mode, and when gently braking around 10 mph.
Due to the way the tranny, clutch etc. are designed you can feel a slight bump then, that's normal. But in some Insights it gets really bumpy or jerky, something to watch out for when test driving it.
Maybe that's just the wrong kind of oil in the CVT (even CVT oil has different types, the clutch in the Insight's CVT makes it sensible so stick to OEM CVT oil or equivalent) but it is better not to have to sort that out.

While the hybrid battery seems indestructible in the second gen, the 12V starter battery is weak and many needed to be replaced within 3 years - including mine. And when it is bad it causes a whole list of strange problems, so it is a good thing to monitor the 12V system voltage.
I had a bad 12V battery replaced under warranty by another mediocre battery, it just isn't bad enough to need immediate replacement so I'm soldiering on. They are relatively cheap so I may just swap another.

The seal around the front windshield leaves a gap to the roof in some Insights, which causes a burring sound at highway speeds. It can be cured by filling the gap with silicone. My windshield was replaced some time ago (rogue hubcap jumping and changing lanes without flashing the indicators) and sadly I do have the gap and occasinoal burr since (not before) so mine is up for that treatment too.

Handling wise you need to keep an eye on tire pressure as low pressure compromises the cornering grip.
Most, though not all, Insighters feel that handling improves on tire pressure higher that on the door placard; many use around 40 PSI. Fuel economy improves definitely. You'd need to try and see what works best for you.

Fuel economy is on average very close to Prius economy, while the EPA rating suggests the Prius is way more economical.
Check the sites where actual users log their fuel consumption like Fuelly and compare Prius to Insight - then you see what's the true economy.

When you are not accustomed to the concept then you may be disappointed by the acceleration. It does not feel fast, because the CVT takes the jerking gear changes away.
Of course, it has a small engine so you need to rev it for fast acceleration.
It does make some noise when you rev it too - that while it makes very little sound (and revs very low) when you keep a constant pace.

A colleague of mine test drove but did not buy an Insight. I asked him how it went.
"I did not like the way it accelerates. It felt sluggish."
"Mine isn't sluggish. How come?"
"Well, it revs when you give it some gas."
"Yes, as it should."
"I don't like to go above 4000 revs. I kept it at 3000 max."
"Ah, you never floored it?"
"Nowhere near!"
"but when you drive your current car, do you floor that when you accelerate?"
"All the time, I put it in 4th or 5th as soon as I can and boot it."
"But you never even tried booting the Insight?"
"No, don't like the revs and the noise."
"Is your car noisy when you boot it?"
"It is quite noisy even if I don't, it is a diesel."
"..."

Default its not that slow!

i have a 2012 ex with nav and it has paddle shifters, its actually fun driving with the manual shift! its a 7 speed and you van feel v-tec kick in from 3500 t0 5500 rpm, its actually fairly quick,the shifts are very fast too.. i leave allot of cars at the stop lights and i raced, yes raced another insight with out paddle shift and blew him away! the car is fun, you can turn off eco mode and put it in sport and its not that bad either! so slow it is not! it is also fun to see how many mpg you can get, i range from 42 mpg driving fast to 50mpg watching my speed and keeping it in the green!

I am glad the news is encouraging, thanks for the information. I see the mpg and economy is way up there, although what troubles me is the warranty on the battery pack and general feel of the vehicle?

Would it make a good family car?
Is it big enough for 3 or 4 in a long journey? Is it like an armchair or a stadium seat?

the car is ok for a small family , i have 2 kids, 10 and 4 and we all fit very well in the car, i have taken long trips and its great on the highway! i find it to be very stable at speed and smooth, and it get great gas milage! easy 50 plus on the highway. The seats are comfortable, i tend to sit up straight and i can ride a solid 2 hours with no issues, i have a ex loaded and i have a arm rest, its small but u can rest your arm, it has a dead pedal where you can rest your left foot on and use cruise and its very comfortable, i enjoy my car allot! if i was you, i would look for a 2014 to avoid the piston issues, i just plan on taking my car to the dealer for all the services! the car is fun, comfortable and cheap on gas, i fill up at 8 or 9 gallons and getting 47 to 50 mpg average per tank! driving calmly consistently! also the nav system is super easy to use and the paddle shifters are fun to use when you get the erg to kick it up every now and then and you will still get 50 mpg with a little bit of fun thrown in! also the warranty is great! i believe it has a 6 year 60,000 mile power train warranty and that would cover the battery! as long as you take it to the dealer and follow there service, you will be covered, this is a specialty type of vehicle, so you got to do the maintenance at the Honda dealer!

Any way abut the warranty for the battery.

Is there a way to check the recharging capability of the car?

Do a search here and on the internet generally on the IMA warranty. The system is part of the emissions systems and therefore has a longer warranty than the "drivetrain". But the reason it say it varies is that emission warranties are longer in CARB states. CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. They set emission standards for California and several states have also adopted those standards. So there are federal rules and stricken CARB ones.
