  1. IMA & Charging System. 2010 Insight

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Even if you replace a couple of cells, the others are probably on the way out too. Mixing a pack of new and old cells does not seem like a good idea. Replacing old for old from another pack will keep you busy in the coming years. A new trusted pack seems your best option. The car will feel...
  2. Coasting without regen - this is what you guys still do? Tips for coasting downhill-

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Some observations: Most cars, even pure gasoline cars, do use fuel cut-off when decelerating. The injectors simply do not fire. G2 Insights close their valves during DFCO while the engine keeps rotating ('running' sounds strange with no fuel involved); it does not even pump air into the...
  3. Surprisingly spacious Insight - what have you managed to squeeze into your Insight??

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Ah - I have a different perception of 'queen size' :) I have been to the States 32 years ago and the only motel that advertised having queen sized beds turned out to have really tiny beds. I bet there was some wishful exaggeration in play. The bed I moved was definitely not 152 cm wide; it was a...

The savings are even bigger as the fuel price is actually in euro, not dollars, but the site does not allow foreign currencies and I did not bother to recalculate to dollars (at an ever changing exchange rate...) Most of the savings is due to driving style, mainly following traffic (at a safe...
  5. Surprisingly spacious Insight - what have you managed to squeeze into your Insight??

It was a queen sized bed with the frame intact but hugging the driver seats shoulder (and mine) so it was a rather tight fit. I don't like to drive with the trunk open, that would have made it easy. Just the mattress should be easy, unless you plan on not driving alone. The MPG does not suffer...
  6. I'm thinking of buying a 2nd Gen

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Slight jerkiness is normal, especially around 10 mph (the transition from clutch slip to full engagement and vice versa) and when driving around 20 mph at a constant speed (EV mode engaging and disengaging). The learning procedure can improve it, but some Insights remain somewhat jerky no matter...
  7. Battery Keeps Dying - Not Sure if IMA

    Troubleshooting and Problems
Usually if the 12V voltage drops you get several system errors, not just the IMA one. If you live in a hot climate (you might add your general location to your profile) the IMA battery is likely to suffer more as batteries do not like excessive heat. If the auxiliary fuse blows the IMA system...
  8. hybrid battery replacement

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Most of us 2nd gen owners have no idea how long a replacement battery would last as we're still on the original one. If only the 12V battery would last as long... they don't and dropping 12V battery voltage causes the on-board computers to throw havoc. If you get an IMA error 9 out of 10 times...
  9. Battery Keeps Dying - Not Sure if IMA

    Troubleshooting and Problems
The IMA/CEL light appears when the battery voltage drops to around 9 Volt. You would see other system errors too at that voltage. All those systems work fine, just not at 9 Volt.
  10. Battery Keeps Dying - Not Sure if IMA

    Troubleshooting and Problems
Even a new battery can die. 12V batteries don't like prolonged exposure to temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), and a full discharge can kill them. Especially when one of the 6 battery cells is already lower; that cell then inverts, i.e. gets charged the wrong way round, when...
  11. 2012-Oil Consumption issue, now not driveable

    Troubleshooting and Problems
There's a reason Honda sells less and less cars over here. More than one, actually.
  12. 2012-Oil Consumption issue, now not driveable

    Troubleshooting and Problems
There are 2012 Insights over here that have the oil burning issue despite using E95 gas of top tier companies. It may occur later than usual, but gas quality is only part of the problem at best.
  13. Would an oil pan heater be beneficiary

    Modifications and Technical Discussions
It would take about 15 hours to get a gallon of water from room temperature to boil using just 25 Watt, assuming no heat loss... The heat capacity of an engine block is a multitude of that, so even if you used it all night I'd doubt you'd notice it.
  14. What did you do to your G2 Insight today?

    Honda Insight Forum 2nd-Gen Discussion
Thanks. No, there's no simpler way. The neat way would be to route the wire through the rubber tube that houses the wires for the license plate lights and the wiper motor etc, but that means more trim needs to be pulled. That needs warm weather, patience and precision, and so far I score none of...
  15. LED Headlights

    Modifications and Technical Discussions
Got another set of cheap €16 LED headlights (see https://www.insightcentral.net/forums/honda-insight-forum-2nd-gen-discussion/99225-what-did-you-do-your-g2-insight-today.html#post1418741). Long story short - better than the other cheap set, to the point that they are a slight improvement on...
