Want to change my fuel filter. Anyone know where it is located?

The fuel filter is located inside the tank. It is mounted just above the fuel pump on the bracket that holds the pump. It is a royal pain to get to, since you need to drop the tank. You also need a special tool from Honda to remove the pump retaining nut.

The service manual specifies that the filter is only to be replaced when flow suffers. The test they use to determine this is fuel pressure.

I looked in a manual that gives estimates on time to do jobs. For the fuel filter on just about every other car it was something like .2 hours, .3 hours. For the Insight it has 1.3 hours listed to R&R. Of course that's assuming you know what your doing.

This is just another way auto manufactures prevent owners from doing their own work and saving money. With dealership service department quality falling, I am angry vehicles are designed in such a way as to prevent us from doing our own service. Some cars make it so difficult to even do your own oil changes!

I figure when I am old I will have no choice but to take my cars in for service, but while I am still able service should be designed with us in mind.

How old is "OLD".

I'm 64 and still service and do most repairs on my vehicles!

Its mounted on the intake side of the pump just below the pump. The pumps sump is also designed as a centrifugal filter since the overpressure discharge is directed to spin the fuel in the sump. (the big pieces will not readily be able to "clog" the filter) It is accessible from the top (pump access cover in the IMA case) and replacement of the retaining ring is a bit tricky (no special tool required, but it would be easier with one). I pinched the gasket and caused a fuel odor problem the last time I was in there to fix a broken fuel gauge sending unit (part of the same assembly).

The filters basically a lifetime unit unless you add some contaminant.

HTH! :)

I just checked the service manual this morning. :) According to the diagram, the fuel pump is located below the filter. The pickup filter on the bottom of the pump is standard on almost every vehicle to keep chunks of gunk out of the filter. In general, EFI pumps cannot suck through a filter as they generate very little suction (aside from cooling, one of the reasons they are most often mounted in tank).
