I lol'd at the comment claiming you can't get 70 mpg in a G1 insight... I get 65 mpg and I don't even try hard.

I got 68mph driving through the hills between Santa Fe NM and Boulder CO last week without focusing on hypermiling. I was keeping it at 55mph (and in 4th gear) due to a tire issue, but that's all the "special effort" it took for me to get near 70mph on an almost 300k mile automobile. Had I been focused on my driving, I'm sure I could have eek'd two more mpgs or more.

This is an interesting technique. He must have got it from Honda. Running it at idle for 40 minutes must induce some kind of background charge that can slowly top off the pack like a grid charger to top balance in the NiMH cells.

That's an interesting idea. I wonder how effective balancing this way could be compared to our external grid chargers? If this has merit I would consider doing this every month or so. Easier than a multi-day charge/discharge (although likely not as effective).

It seems like this may be a similar idea to Sean's method of a multi-hour gentle drive to bring sleepy batteries up to speed.
