My current drive is a '99 Ford Ranger XLT. I'm getting 16-19 mpg. My regular commute is 13 miles, from Westmont to Itasca, all non-highway (route 83). For this, I'm not expecting miracles.
However...
I'm a PC tech for US Cellular. So my job regularly has me driving all over Chicagoland, As far north as Gurnee and as far south as Lansing. In addition to Chicagoland I support stores as far east as Fort Wayne IN, to Springfield IL. I hit these remote locations up to 5 times a month. I also love traveling by car. Road trip to Key West, Vegas, New Orleans, etc.
Three years ago I test drove an Insight and I would have bought at that point if the dealer hadn't jerked me around on my trade in (the blasted ranger again) and I couldn't find another one at a different dealer.
Times have changed. I'm almost done paying for my truck ($1007.78 and counting) and my fiance just bought a Jeep Wrangler. She didn't realize they sucked gas like it was no one's business and it would be nice to help her out.
As for the unattractiveness. I love the way the Insight looks. I would get a silver one and do a gullwing conversion if I thought I could get it to look like an updated Delorean (love that movie). As for drivability, we both know how well the State of Illinois takes care of its roads. For you non-Illini, that means "badly." I've been driving a small truck for the last five years and I could really get used to the stiffer, less bouncy ride.
During my test drive several years ago, I noted that the interior felt more like my old Ford Aspire than my fathers Civic. Though the trim is sparse, I would much rather have the more comfortable seating position of the Insight over the Ranger or the Jeep that I was planning on replacing Old Red for.
My truck gets an average 17mpg. My fiance's 4 cyl Wrangler gets about 16. I simply cannot afford to feed both tanks on a regular basis and though the payments of a $20,000 car are not much different from my truck, I can much easier offset that by the lower annual fuel cost. Even if I drive it poorly and get only 50 mpg, I'll be 25mpg over the best I've ever gotten in my truck.
I don't want to piss anyone off here, so don't take it badly. It seems that everyone (minus my father and fiance) is trying to talk me out of this. I have been thinking about this for three years and the current prices of gasoline do not help.
Just think, when gas drops back down to 99cents per gallon, we'll all be able to buy a new house! I appreciate that the Insight is not for everyone. But my truck is no longer for me, and my fiance is counting on me.
Oh the joys of responsibility
