Silver 2006 Gen 1 Insight with a M/T. I found the listing on Craigslist and it looks like a very nice car. I have not seen it for myself but if anyone does see it please be sure to make a note of the condition. Seems like a good deal since the 2006 M/T are so rare anyways.

Anyone know why 2005 seems to be the rarest year?
My own, untested theory:

Sales of the G1 Insight declined every year. Then, in 2006, once it was announced that 2006 would be the final year, a lot of sales came from people who realized that this was their last chance to buy a new one. There were even some G1 owners who purchased a second one in 2006.

Production numbers

I did find the following links that discussed the US production

InsightCentral.net - Honda Insight Sales Statistics

Annual Sales:
1999 17
2000 3,788
2001 4,726
2002 2,216
Total Insights to Date: 10,730 (1999-2002)

Honda Insight Sales Figures - GOOD CAR BAD CAR
Year Honda Insight
U.S. Sales Honda Insight/Canadian Sales
2002 2216 n/a
2003 1168 n/a
2004 583 9
2005 666 5
2006 722 21

Totals are just shy of 14k produced in the US and Canada. Guess another 2-3k produced worldwide. According to the above there were half as many 2004 models as the 2003 models. Rarest of the rare? 1999 with 17 produced but for all practical purposes it was the 2004 model. Who has ever heard of a 1999 honda insight?

Well there goes my retirement plan. ;)

Too bad they don't break them down by transmission or color. I owned a 1993 CYM RX-7 R1 for a while, that was one of 350 in the world.

I have...

Not only did I see one in real life I also got to drive it for 120 miles (Chrysler bought one that they imported from Japan). At the time I didn't like it because of the RHD and the engine kept shutting off when I stopped....funny huh? And the next week I drove a Prius RHD also. I worked in Advanced Vehicle Engineering so that is why they had the vehicles so early on.
