I met a fellow near me here in N. CA, who took his right front seat out of his 2000 Insight, and he puts his kayak inside the passenger compartment on an angle, and all his paddling gear, and it all fits dandy.

from the research I did it seemed to be the case - hybridcars.com has a webpage that lays out a lot of estimated credit amounts, and they state this:
"By the way: Based on info currently available to ACEEE, the Honda Insight manual, as well as the upcoming Saturn VUE and Chevy Malibu hybrids, may not meet the necessary Bin 5 emissions levels required for the tax credit."

I think it's ridiculous! but it's one of the reasons why I rushed my purchase last year - I wanted a manual transmission hybrid, and the insight is the only model where it's offered.

I got my insight through a NJ dealer (Jersey City). It was a real hassle, I wouldn't recommend them!

I saw that suggested/proposed Federal Tax Credit you reported on. It's a good bit more than I was expecting, not that I'd turn down a lesser amount either.

As for that NJ dealer, thanks for the tip. It's appreciated.

On this end I'll be picking mine up from a NY dealer on Monday AM and I look forward to the drive home; about a 100 mile trip, westbound on I-80.
