I know you can't be too choosey when buying a used Insight, especially in the UK as they don't come up for sale that often.

Is there a most desired colour (rare, suits the car best etc) other than personal preference?

As much as I like silver, avoid it. It makes the car too hard to spot in low light conditions. A distracted driver rear-ended me at 6:30 am at dawn, and another distracted at 6:30 pm. Either that or plan to have you headlights on at those times.

Personally as gross as it is I particularly like Citrus Yellow. To me it fits the car, plus it was only available for one year (you in the UK get two years of it), it was only available on manual transmission cars for us, basically the deffinition of an Insight. It deffinitely screams "LOOK AT ME!" plus I think it would be hard to blend in to traffic with.

There is also red which I have, it's nice, but was really all that I could find at the time. It was the choice color at that time, but I have to say I'm partial to Monte Carlo Blue. It makes the car look expensive and adds a touch of class somehow.

Silver, while it gives the image of an alluminum car, and is one of the most popular colors, is a bit too bland for me. Most Insight's were painted this color and like Delta Flyer said it blends in and you might not be seen.

The other option you in the UK have is Black (ok really really dark grey). If it wern't so hot here I would be more jealous of not being able to get it in the US. It kind of blends the whole car together with the rear trim being black as well.

I like the Citrus Yellow exterior, but I'm not too keen on the interior.

Being right-hand drive in the UK, a Japanese import is an option - any major differences in specification?

So, the colors of Insights as they came from the factory (exterior/interior):

Japan:
1998-2003: ?/Grey
2004: ?/Beige

UK:
1998-2003: ?/Grey
2004: ?/Beige

USA:
1999: Citrus Yellow/Grey; Formula Red/Grey; Silver/Grey
2000-2003: Monte Carlo Blue/Grey; Formula Red/Grey; Silver/Grey
2004: Navy Blue Pearl/Beige; Formula Red/Beige; Silver/Beige

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'd appreciate help in filling in the UK and Japan info, and the schmancy names that Honda gave their paint. (And where does Europe fit? Do they get the UK colors, or the US colors?)

As for the question, I think Citrus Yellow is the best Insight color. As unique as the car itself. Plus, I think it's snazzy-looking.

In Canada the lights have to be on all the time! It helps when you drive a silver like I do. My first choice would have been blue but as I'm in the country blue would have always looked dirty. I like the light (oxygen?) blue too.

This simply is not true. A distracted driver is a distracted driver, no matter what color car you have. A silver colored car does not make you invisible. If another driver can't see you then they really shouldn't be on the road to begin with.

When did they change the red color? Our 2000 has the bright red (which I like) but I've noticed the newer Insights have a darker red. When we bought the car, the choice was between the Citrus (which I wanted) and the red (which my parents wanted). Guess who won... The most rare is probably the citrus since it was only offered a year or two.

Kapps, the only red ever offered is New Formula Red. If your car seems to be lighter perhaps your paint is starting to develop some oxidation? The only change to a darker color was from Monte Carlo Blue to Navy Blue Pearl (BTW, not too particularly keen on this color, almost black but not) in 04.

Colour is obviously all down to personal taste. My (dubious) opinions on Insight colours are:

Red - One of the best colours. You can imagine you are driving a small Ferrari. Unlikely to get in an accident from not being seen.

Citrus Yellow - Definitely the most distinctive colour and the biggest head turner. Not to everyone's taste. Least accident prone?

Silver - A classy colour but perhaps now getting a bit too common in all makes of cars. Best for hiding dirt.

Light Blue - Worst colour IMHO. A wishy washy non colour. Best suited for blue rinse brigade.

Dark Blue - One of the best colours. Surprisingly statesman like. Shines up really well. Perhaps a bit dull.

Black - I have seen a black Insight in person and it made the car look insignificant which was surprising. Difficult to keep clean. Orange seats clash violently. Most accident prone?

Thanks Rick. I might have confused it with the change in blue colors. I don't see many other Insights these days (although I never really have).

I'm interested to see more of what the Insight looks like in white.

Since the cars are pretty rare in the UK, I've found an importer who can get me one to order from Japan - since white is Japanese only I might have one of them and be rather unique! 8)

Plus I like it too, even though it's shows the dirt and has been an out of fashion colour for cars since the early 90's.

I'm getting excited now! :D

If anyone has photos, I'd like to see them - I've only found a couple of pics on the Japan Honda website and the one shown on the colour option page on this site.

I didn't bookmark it, but if you get on Honda's Japan site and search around the Insight page there is like an owners club link there that includes pictures. You best bet it to use an online translator to translate as much of the pages as possible. If you can't find it let me know.

Jep. White would be a very nice colour as it is THE colour for a Honda.
There's British-Racing-Green, Bugatti-Blue, Ferrari-Red, Mercedes-Silver and.....Honda-White

Just imagine a limited edition Insight: in white with a matte-black bonnet, red "Type-R" style Seats, "Type-R" markings with a GREEN-coloured "R" instead of red....
