Hello everyone,
Been looking for parts for the just in case thing and found a decent amount of parts from a local junker. Unfortunately I didn't beat them to the car before scraping the car for aluminum. Ohhhhhh it made me cringe how much money they made from the car in aluminum..... RIP Insight 2003 #2360.

Fortunately the gentlemen knew he had a good motor and made an ad that I found after new years. They were just about to scrape a perfectly good transmission and engine. I asked him a day before to gather everything he had for the car. Got a almost a full front suspension, steering column, both kuckles, brake booster, full wire harness (cut up), wiper motor, and a few other misc.

So the motor and trans have 51k after the wreck which was a bad rear end collusion for this insight. It sat 10 years until the the city got after the land owner and then had these guys come by and haul it away. All checked out, it was his neighbor lmao. I just walked over and asked before we started putting in the truck.

Drained both the oils in transmission and motor and both seemed pristine for how long they sat for. I did notice they cut the exhaust off way to close to the block and unfortunately let metal into the top end. Bummer... It seems the engine hasn't moved since they cut it. I slightly moved it when I first saw the engine and turned easily.

My questions...
So at this point, I want to make this engine ready to drop into a project car or a replacement.

So what should I replace at this point?
For a head gasket what should I use? OEM?
Idlear pulley?
Rear main seal (is it this leaking? below...)
Vavle cover gasket is toast so yes.
Thermostat?
Anything else????
Should I take the oil pan off?

Transmission:
Transmission main gaskets? (Look at the pic)

After braking the engine and transmission apart i noticed a decent amount of Black oil residue possibly from transmission oil I think?

Looks like a possible leak for the transmission?? This picture is at the transmission.

Should I do anything else with the auto transmission? I will need to find a few exterior metal pipes due to damage from being bent. Not to bad.

Thanks everyone!

That just looks like the grease for the flywheel splines.
That looks like a great find with such low

That looks like a great find with such low miles. I don't know about the CVT, but I really don't think that you would need to pull the pan or replace the head gasket on the motor. Hopefully others will weigh in.

How are people scrapping these as aluminum? My yard will only buy them as "whole car" because its so covered in non aluminum parts. I scrapped a parts car shell and got about $70

If you don't have a home for all those cut up wire harnesses... I'd love to take them off your hands. I'm always looking for already cut up harnesses, so that I don't have to cut connectors off good ones.

Anything steel that is currently seen rusting is ripe for replacement, especially clamps. If this engine sat for a very long time rubber components (including seals/gaskets) may have begun to harden in spite of the low mileage. Other than that, the idler pulley bearing is easy to swap out, but likely okay with that little mileage. Same goes for water pump.

I'd clean it up, change oil/filters, flush coolant and replace with Honda extended life fluid and run it. Congrats on a good find.

They scraped the car by unbolting what ever they could and cut the car up into sections and separated as much aluminum as they could. All that work for a little more then $100 for the aluminum. They couldn't get the wire harness out so they cut it out (picture below). It was nice to just collect all the good parts for an hour drive. An odd story for sure haha

Mudder, the harness I need to use a plug or two off it first. Not sure when I will get to it, but I will keep you in mind when that time comes.

Yup the thermostat looked clean (looked like it kept a bunch of sludgy coolant out), pulley wheel had some rust but the bearing seemed fine, both easy to replace once the engine is in.
The only seal I am worried for is the rear engine seal. Probably just replace that for the age. The head gasket I'm sure is crushed and only can be used once. The fluids all seemed clean even got some coolant out of the block and that looked very nice. Took the drain plug out of the back to find that little bit.

I brought this question up just to double check I'm not missing anything to replace while the engine is out.

Thanks everyone for all the comments!

Obviously keep all the connectors you want. I'm not in any rush to receive them... it's just always good to have extras. I've 'consumed' at least QTY10 IMA wire harnesses in the past decade.
