So I just bought this '00 with 29,454 miles on it. If I get in before 30,000 I can buy a Honda warranty extension adding 36,000 miles/3 years for $1500.

Then the dealer (Ford/Dodge/etc. - big dealer, long history, seem like good folks) tells me he can sell me a warranty that'll add 6 years/60,000 miles for $1400. He says their mechanics are certified to do "everything". Of COURSE he's trying to sell me a warranty, but at least it LOOKS pretty comprehensive.

Any thoughts/opinions?

Personal recommendation, if the cars not over 42 months old you can get a Honda care warranty at http://www.curryhondacare.com . Once you go in the pricing section it asks for your email then enter the info about the car. They send you an email with a code for an extra $90 off. With the $90 cupon code (again considering the cars less than 42 months old) you could get similar coverage from the for about half of what the dealership wants.

I got my warranty though them and so far so good. I had my dealership look in their system, it shows Honda care warranty to 6 years or 100,000 miles. And it was a lot less than any dealership here was wanting for a warranty.

If you do go with an outside one ask questions and get stuff in writing. Does it cover the whole hybrid system? Are expensive things like the DC/DC converter, or ABS modulator covered? You should also be able to haggle on the price of the warranty as well.

And a question, judging by your icon did you find a green one with only 30K on it?

Yup - got a green one with 29.5 k - very clean & pretty (just one scratch to touch up).

Unfortunately it was originally sold in October 2000, which makes it 44 months old - dang! But thanks for trying.

Awsome thats a pretty rare find. Bummer on beingn just a few month out of getting the Honda warranty. If your set on a warranty I'd say shop around the different warranty companies first, remember the dealership stands to make a pretty penny on selling you the warranty.

FYI, you have 5 years 50,000 mile warranty on the drive train
and 8 years 80,000 emissions and IMA system warranty from Honda still.

Actually seems to be 3 years/36,000 on the drivetrain - in fact everything but the hybrid stuff. That's according to two different Honda dealers. The one we spent time with today said that's what all Hondas are - 3/36. Does that seem incorrect?

I bought a warranty, from the Honda dealer who's going to be doing any service I need. It's from CNA, and in their pricing they specifically price for the Insight (which ends up being more than other Hondas). Both I and the dealer believe this is because CNA is recognizing and covering the unique Insight bits & pieces. However, I'm going to call CNA Monday for horse's mouth confirmation. I can still back out and get a prorated refund.
