A serious enough backfire can also relate to a misfire and will set the MIL. If you can identify a reproduceable pattern then get it checked out. And show your mechanic just how to make it misbehave.

not sure what MIL is but...

I'll start watching it closer. Hopefully it's just a plug or coil and not something serious like a valve.
