Hi,

Does anyone know if you can purchase the car seat material. I have a 2001 with Grey/Black seats. As normal it is the bolster part on the drivers side which is ripped.

Maybe you can buy just the upper half of fabric from a US car given we drive on the other side of the road. Our passenger seat/your driver side is hardly ever worn.
Although the bottom cushion/covers are slightly different, both sides of the top cushions/covers are identical. This means that someone in the U.S. might be willing to sell you a good condition "passenger" side cushion&cover, or just the cover. Even if it's dirty, stain remover and a washing machine work miracles:)

While it is true that any (same-color) top cover/cushion will fit any seat, there is technically one difference between the driver and passenger covers: the passenger cover has a rear pocket, whereas the driver cover doesn't. Obviously this only matters to purists.

I'm talking to some textile nerd friends about trying to find out what that particular weave is called, and I'll update if I come up with anything.

It would be interesting to find out what the Trim types are. When I did search for seat covers, I found the Honda Insight seat components on the Honda Parts site. This showed various Trim types.

TRIM NH167L
TRIM B113L
TRIM Y56L
TRIM YR212L
This site appears to be offering drivers seat covers in NH167L "GRAPHITE BLACK" for RHD cars at £157 + shipping:

I have no experience of this seller!

That is a Japanese Honda parts seller. I have successfully ordered discontinued Insight parts from both them and megazip.net (another Japanese Honda parts seller).

It would be nice if we could identify the fabric for the seat sides for the 00-03 and 04-06 (different color and material.).

The center stuff is called "spacer mesh" I think. I have samples from Mayer Fabrics. These would have to checked against actual cars, but I think these would work well as center sections:

Car colorCenter section color nameMayer Fabrics number
CitrusLimelight301-013
SilverBlack301-006
RedPaprika (lighter red)301-011
RedCayenne (darker red)301-009
Blue 00-03Sapphire301-024
Blue 04-06Ink301-004
AquamarineCaribbean301-034
Orange (I think this shows up as an oddball but legit Insight color?)Marigold301-019

And I think it would be awesome to make these into custom fit seat covers. Then you don't have to make the sides match the car because there isn't much to match.

As for colored center panels, I have a seat cover with lime mesh center panels for my Citrus and the drivers' seat center panel is already filthy. Ideally, we would find a way to attach them nicely but make them easily detachable so that they can be washed.

It's almost like the seats were regulated by OSHA or NHTSA. o_O

What's the price for this fabric? I can't see the price without logging in...

I don't know the price or availability. I was just able to order samples. I was considering asking GPT-4 to tell me the proper names of materials used in auto upholstery, like the cord you can sew in for stiffness, etc, and what kind of sewing machine, thread and needles. That is, teach me how to do my own upholstery, and suggest some sources. Then go and make some insane bright mesh pattern for the center section. Because that bright orange center of that charcoal car? That's freakin' brilliant. Something with WHEELPANTS needs to have equally insane seats.

Yes. I'm now in the market for thrashed-dirty door cards that I can reupholster in fake fur. LOL
I just noticed that the fabric of my insight 2005 is different, I knew that the color is different, but the texture of the side covering of the seats is also different.

I spent a few hours looking at all the products on a website that have the SPACER MESH. I can't find anything resembling the waves of the insight 2000s but for the more recent versions as in the image of my seats, here a product which on the screen look a lot like what I have for the sides of the seats.

What I've come up with from talking to my textile nerd friends is a bunch of "Here is a way you could fix it with a cool patch" and not much "This is what you are looking for"
What I have come up with from MY research is that this is probably a 2x1 baby rib knit, pretty much the same thing as your typical cotton socks. it is bonded to a backing that keeps it stretched to a consistent spacing. I can't seem to find any sources for this material, as almost everything you find selling fabric in that knit is tubes for socks or cuffs.

I tried to figure out some of the naming conventions, tools needed, suppliers, and rough prices. All of this should be not be taken as truth but read with a critical mind. Looks like a DIY project from scratch will probably set one back mostly for the machine needed for the welting: ChatGPT
