For some reason I have the CEL light on, it coincided with my from windscreen washer stopping working!!!!!!

Is there any way to reset the CEL to see if it is a problem, or if it stays out?

Done it, just tried disconnecting the 12v battery, job done.

I assumed the engine management was slightly more intelligent than it is.

You got the light to go off, but did you find out what made it come on? Just making the light go out doesn't just fix the problem that made it come on. Go to Auto Zone/ Kragen/ whatever and ask them to pull the code for you. That will tell you what made it come on in the first place.

It was probably caused by me messing with the fuse box whilst trying to find why the wiper motor stopped working.
