I have a 2002 silver Insight and after about 3250miles the check engine light came on all of a sudden while cruising down the I-5. I have read in the manual that the light can come on if the gas cap is not secured properly. This is probably my 4 or 5 tank of gas and this has never happened before. I made sure the cap was on tight before i left the gas station. After about 30 miles it came on. I re-tightened it but the light has not gone off.
Is this just a matter of patience to let the emissions system fix itself and the engine light then turns off? I was wondering if others have had this problem with the CVT? Are there any recalls on 2002 CVT's? :?

Check the Yahoo! groups hybrid and insight forums... people there have reported CEL lights before. In short, you should take it in and have a tech check the on board diagnostics of the emissions control system.

The Check Engine light is a single indicator that is triggered by a fairly broad range of errors the computer detects. Having a loose gas cap is one of the simple things that can trigger it that you can check yourself. If that's not the cause, then the light means "Get me to a mechanic who can hook into the computer and read the more specific error message."

It might be important. You should not delay.

CEL fixed....

I just got back from Honda and they ran a diagnostic check and said that it was my gas cap. Thank goodness it wasn't something more than that. I told the rep that I have tanked up many times before and this had not happened in the past. Anyways, he showed me how to do it.Basically, you have to give it two 360 degree turns to tighten! I guess they will charge you to remove the engine light if it happens again. I thought they were nuts! He said it was because the car owner caused the problem and it was not caused by the car itself (mechanically or electrically). Hopefully,
i can concentrate now on my tank mileage which is at 59.9mpg!! My best yet!!!

check engine light at 3250 miles

My check engine light on my new 2003 insight alos went on at 3250..this is interesting as it was same mielage as original poster..it may have been the gas cap though I always have tried to tighten it properly.I think its ludicrous that it takes 3 DAYS before it will go off due to gas cap.If it was a more serious problem it can cause damage..at least I have an apt for Mon to get oil change..but I have to drive to work all weekend...any thoughts from you experienced Insighters? thanks in advance zen
