Hello fellow gas-sippers,

I've been working on an ongoing seat cover project(s) for my Citrus 2000 Honda Insight.

At the start of the pandemic I needed a creative outlet, so I decided to modify my own citrus seat covers! I got really lucky finding the fabric from an eBay seller in the UK.

(Installation and used seat covers provided by the famous KILLER3CYL)

Here are some progress pics:

Shoe Sleeve Gesture T-shirt Grey

Product Rectangle Textile Orange Bag

Brown Wood Shipping box Flooring Tints and shades

Sleeve Wood Rectangle Grass Plant

So this comes to my next inquiry:

I've acquired some JDM Orange seatback trim/covers from JP Car Parts (last two brand new) and I'd like to find two new (if possible) seat Cushion trim/covers to go with them.

Does anyone have access to brand new seat cushion covers, or ones that are in good condition?

Thanks for your time.

Warm regards,
CS

Can you provide a link to the Ebay listing? My citrus has some nice leather seat covers, but the option of going back to original would be nice.
Unfortunately I got the last bit of this guy's fabric in that color. It had stains I had to work around on.

Full disclosure, I had to modify these citrus seat covers. I didn't purchase them complete from anywhere; those have been long discontinued, give or take a few pieces floating around in Japan.

I would recommend going to a nearby fashion district if you have one, and search for "spacer mesh" fabric that matches your car exterior. Then take that to an upholstery shop to stitch into your original seat covers.

courtsoto,
Absolutely fantastic.🏅 You knocked it out of the park, Mister! I was actually in a craft store today grabbing some 'foam specific glue' I had seen (I have a couple of ideas in case of possible deformation or tearing of the support core), as I am prepping to undo the covers as part of a full/deep interior cleaning. Walking past the sewing section, I half-heartedly brainstormed upholstery color schemes and patterns with exasperation, knowing that no such skillset exists for me. Then I peek into the good ole I.C. forums to see your post! ☝😲👍
Rather than becoming overwhelmed by envy, I'll simply ask... Where do do you sign up for the Pre-Orders, Buster!? 🤓💵💰💶.

Thanks a ton Cyberdyne!

What I would honestly recommend is figuring out which color you want to convert your seat covers to (or ones you don't mind altering).

I would love to help anyone out who's interested in altering their seat covers, but as far as doing it myself, my work schedule is too busy and my stitch work is just not fast nor professional enough.

However, if you can determine which fabric you want I could help you find the right material for it. I could maybe even draft the pattern pieces with the seat cover you're altering.

Once you have the fabric and the seat patterns ready to go, I would strongly recommend taking that to an upholstery shop where they specialize in that kind of stitchwork and have them put it all together for you.

I'm here to answer any questions and to give as many insights as possible. 🤓

Thanks for sharing your brave and fun project. Both colors are cool, but the orange is most striking. Amazing that you were able to find OEM style fabric. If anyone finds that their seat foam is a little crumbly from ageing, I found that you can work flowable silicone into the surface of the foam to fortify it. The great thing is that the silicone stays flexible just like the foam. Here's a picture of the silicone I found... -Sorry if this shows duplicate images

Based on how the folds look, it looks a lot thinner than the similar material on the actual seat, which has about a quarter inch open cell foam backing.

I would take a cover off a seat and find some upholstery shops and have them assess it.

The green cloth on the left is a random sample of spaces mesh, held next to a seam on the inside of an Insight seat. The black fabric is two layers of spaces mesh. The Insight mesh feels more substantial than the sample. Also note the foam backing, which itself is backed with a white cloth.

Finding the equivalent would probably take some work unless you got lucky and the upholstery shops near you have a clue and a penchant for buying the best material they can get, as opposed to choosing whatever fabric and saying "good enough". They probably, though, are used to dealing with leather or classic car upholstery, which isn't likely to be spaces mesh.

In addition to the center panel, a source of the side panels is needed. If building from scratch, the strips that are sewn into the seams and to which the hose nose rings attach will need to be found too. That's the green and white strip to the right; the hole is where a ring attaches the seat to wire in the seat frame.

Open cell foam often deteriorates and turns to a mess; I have seen this in car headliners once they hit about 20 years.

I've left this at full resolution so that that the material can be studied.

If you happen to have a seat you can alter, you can use the inner pieces that connect to the hog rings.

I haven't tried doing it completely from scratch, but I'd recommend altering seat covers you already have that you don't mind modifying.

The spacer mesh actually is meant to be spray glued to foam on the seat cover pieces. There's quarter inch foam on the inside.

I'd recommend shopping for the fabric yourself so you can see it and compare it to your car or whatever you're trying to match. I got really lucky with my citrus spacer mesh cause I observed it though pictures. It was actually thicker than the stock spacer mesh btw.

Do we have a suitable fabric for the outer panels?
If you're talking about the lining for the doors then I'd recommend looking for "ribbed upholstery fabric" in gray. Here's an example, but you can probably find a better option:

Also, there are some driver side door liners left online so you can nab a new one and use fabric from your old doors too.

Ohhhh, gotcha. I would still look up some kind of "ribbed upholstery fabric" in gray. Do you have a fabric district anywhere in your area? I can check my local fashion district in downtown LA--I'm gonna search for some aquamarine spacer mesh with a friend soon, so I'll keep you posted.
