Hello everyone,

I am a proud owner of a 2010 Honda Insight EX with 196K Miles, bought it brand new and have all maintenance done at dealer, a few months the first ever problem started to occur, when I turn the key, flashing lights come on dash with strange clicking noise, and car wont start, I put in a brand new battery thinking that was the problem considering the car ran when I jumped it with another car, the new battery helped for a few weeks and experienced the same issue again. (I even posted a video on youtube to show the dealer as I could never duplicate the problem when im there) please check the video and tell me what you think. Some think it could be ground straps, i frankly only located 2 or 3 which seem to be in good condition, not sure where the rest are. dealer says I am crazy there is no issue at all. battery checks out, has anyone experienced this issue and can tell me what to do? I am going crazy here, I would rather see the car collect rust than trade it in or get rid of it, i like it so much.

The charging of the 12V battery under the hood of our Insights is managed by a DC-DC voltage converter, which is the slender black box on the right side of the engine bay as you stand in front of the car facing the engine. If that's gone faulty, it could give the symptoms that you've described: ok with a new battery for a while, but the 12V battery doesn't charge properly - although it does respond positively to a jump start from another car.

There is no alternator on a Honda insight: the 12V battery is (effectively) charged from the 100V IMA battery pack at the rear of the car, via that DC-DC converter.

Looked at the you tube clip,baffling,hope you get it sorted soon,sure you will for the guys on this forum know insights 100%

I'll post your link for you:

If you hook up a Volt meter I'm sure you'll find the voltage is less than 10 Volt when you try to start it.
If you jump it it runs, if you just have driven it it is freshly charged and runs, but if it sat a while it won't. That is a voltage issue.
All systems will fail one by one as the voltage drops. apparently, the brake sensing system is the first to go.

Your new battery is bad just like the old one. It has a dead cell. Boy, I wish I could bet on it.
Either that or a bad brake pedal wire/switch/connector. That too might bridge if the voltage rises, but may cause it to fault at 'legal' voltage levels.
Try the Volt meter...

I once killed my battery by leaving a map light on. After that I could charge it up again, but it wouldn't hold charge for long anymore.
Are you sure you have none of that?

You might also check your brake fluid level.

Thank you so much for your suggestion, Sorry for the late response I was away for work and I wasn't able to login on my mobile device.

Do you happen to know how I can get the DC-DC converter checked? and if I need to have it replaced, approximate cost?

First of all, thank you so much for posting the video.
Second, I really think you may be correct, I charged the battery fully overnight and drove the car in the morning to take kids to school, parked at Walgreens to pickup a few things, tried to start it, same issue, after a few tries it ran. when I plugged the battery back on the charger it read 10.4v, in the morning when it was fully charged it was 13v. something is wrong. My next step is to install a new battery, and hope for the best!

That's a battery with one dead cell indeed!

If you draw power it will invert and the voltage will drop to about 8 Volt, which is enough to power up some systems but will make most of them throw error codes, and disable IMA. Strangely enough the starter motor may sometimes be able to start it, but very slowly.

My son left a door open last weekend and I did not notice until several hours later. But I have a LED grid in the dome light so it takes a while to draw it flat; it still had 11.something Volt in the battery. Phew.

My friend’s 2012 Insight having same problem like yours. Initially the service centre said the starter motor malfunction and the starter motor itself cost like a bomb. However he kinda reluctant and feel that the diagnostic is not correct(because his car only done 40k km). He went to car battery specialist and the mechanic advised to install grounding cable.

Suprisingly the problem solved. However he decided to sell his car off bcz worry with possible recurring issue. Maybe you can try to install any aftermarket grounding cable beforehand.
