I purchased a 2003 MT several months ago, 60K miles. The check engine light came on after a few weeks, and last week I had the codes read by Advance Auto. They reported the following:

P0134: Bank 1 Sensor 1

P1166: Bank 2 Sensor 1

I'd like to try replacing the sensors myself, since others here have had success.

Where are these sensors?

How do I know what to replace them with, other than buying through Honda?

Both codes are related to sensor 1, easily viewed under the hood behind the engine before the 1st cat. (Bank 2 refers to the opposite side of a v-6 or v-8. Insight has only 1 bank, but multiple sensors. some have 2 sensors, some have 3). Unfortunately, sensor 1 on our car is costly, some places want over $300. Shop around, a better price can be had.

O2 sensor provides input for the air-fuel-ratio data. Needed for lean burn.

Easy diy replacement. Be careful when breaking it loose, your wrench could strike the plug coil right in front of your wrench. A solvent like 'PB Blaster' or similar may be useful in loosening any rust.

This link is what I posted for my CVT O2 sensor. The sensor for the cvt was a 4 wire sensor. I've not changed one on the mt yet, but I think all the mt's have a 5 wire sensor. Verify yours and make sure you get the right part. Unplug it 1st, then wrench it. There's a tab to depress while unplugging the wire group.

I saved some $ on Amazon.

It took a few 'complete driving cycles' for the cel to clear.

Thanks for the info Mountain Driver. When I check Amazon for those two sensors, entering my car's profile (2003 Insight MT), the response is that the Bosch 15393 (apparently with 5 wires) is not appropriate to my car, and the NKG 24301 appears to have only 4 wires. There is a different Bosch number (15394) that is indicated as appropriate.

Looking at my cat, it appears that I do have sensors before and after the cat, both 4 wire. The sensor before the cat is a Denso (can't say for sure if it's the OEM). I can't tell if the post cat is Denso or other.

Any other advice? Does anyone else have experience in successfully replacing the O2 sensor(s) on a 2003 MT?

Could the "bank 2" refer to the sensor after the cat?

Good that you verified the number of wires on your sensors. As long as you're using the same 'number of wires sensor' as what is in your car, you will be fine.

The one I took out of mine was a Denso, I replaced it with a 'Walker'.

This is an easy diy, if dinosaur me can do it, you definitely can.

Both your codes refer to 'sensor 1', the one just behind the engine. Banks refer to 'v-type' engines or engines with more than one exhaust manifold/system. I don't understand why your reader said bank 2. If the 2nd sensor codes, it normally would read out as 'sensor 2'. Strange ???

I would start with the sensor the codes refer to (sensor 1), and see if the codes will clear.
