Putting aside safety issues momentarily, has any ever considered or tried to parallel two IMA batteries? I don't know if the charge controls are counting KWH or just measuring voltage. I know it's not typical to parallel NiMh batteries, perhaps some sort of charge balancing would be necessary. Why do this anyway? A few good hills and the current battery is flat. For anyone that knows NE, the climb from I-91 at the Mass pike to the top going west totally empties the battery.
