I am hearing a noise from the 2001 CVT Insight when I accelerate at slow speeds. It sounds like crickets. Sometimes the noise is louder than other times and I usually only hear it when I am driving past another car or a wall or something to magnify/echo the sound for me. The car was just in for a 30,000 mile service and they found nothing wrong with it. I am not able to localize the noise enough to tell them where to look and it doesn't make the noise when it's not moving.

I looked through the archives but no one described a cricket sound. Does anyone have any ideas?

I used to hear crickets when driving past walls, high curbs, and other autos in my old 78 Thunderbird.

The cause of the chirping the first time was my hubcap, the second time, my bearings...

No, wait, there maybe something else I just thought of after posting that last one.

I used to hear those crickets in my 04 Pontiac Asstek (I don't wanna hear it). For about a month, I just sprayed wd40 on the offending spring and it was fine. During a regular tune-up, the dealer replaced my right rear spring and it went away.

I figured out which spring it was by bouncing the corner of each bumper.

Now, is this a rhythmic chirp or an intermittant chirp?

I'm just trying to help, because if you are like me, rattles, chirps, and squeeks that you can't identify will "bug" the heck outta ya!!!

If you have a jokester around, check your axles. I've stuck "zip strips" on other peoples before and it drove them nuts. It could either click on something or emit a whistle depending on placement.

OT: 2Hybrids, honestly an Aztek looks like a Prius II on steriods.

I am hearing it only when I accelerate at slow speeds. If I give the insight alot of gas at take-off or if I travel at speeds over 40 mph I don't hear the sound. It is only at those lower speeds and only occasionally.

I will check the hub caps and the springs. Do I need to worry about the bearings already? The car is a 2001 but it only has about 29500 on it.

It sounds just like crickets but if that is not the best description I could say that it sounds like metal scratching metal. But like crickets wings rubbing together so it chirps in a random melody. Perhaps the Insight is trying to mate?

I remember I had the same sound on my HCH. Some others complained about the same sound and it ended up being the rear spring just like 2hybrids mentioned. I do remember someone mentioning something similar on the on their Insight at yahoo Honda Hybrid group a few years back. Can't remember what they said it was.

As far as hubcaps, I doubt very seriously it's that sound.

2 hybrids: Yes, I'm evil....very evil.

the hubcap scenario I was speaking of was on the old T-bird so I doubt too that this would be an Insight issue.

Springs, brakes, or bearings...that's where I'll put my money

In Bluebelle (CVT) we hear what could be described as a whine sort of whining humming spinning belt driving kind of noise, which noise we hope is just the normal action of the CVT. It is not loud at all. I think I heard it test driving a brand new CVT and my co-pilot at the time said it was just the CVT spinning around and around and around to make the car go...
