I'm looking at a parts car for a replacement CVT Flywheel. The car (2001 CVT) has a bit of a growl in the area of the transmission in D & R. The 2003 CVT I'm replacing the flywheel in (stripped splines) has end play in the ISB: 30 thou (.75 mm), side play: 20 thou (.5 mm). I'm thinking there is a cause relation here.

Can I remove the starter of the parts car and test the end play in situ to evaluate the potential spline condition of the flywheel before removing it? (The splines are definitely there, just want to know longevity... ) Is there an obvious wobble in a loose one if it's running?

Is there a reason you don't want to go to a junkyard and get a gen2 cvt flywheel. I would hope they are improved. My thought is if you replace it with a gen 1 you're still going to have the bad design and it'll be difficult to get a good one to begin with.
