When traveling at a steady low speed (between 15 and 27 MPH), and while having my foot steady on the accelerator, my car begins to lurch/jutter....

Any time I step on the peddle, the lurching goes away, but if I try to hold it steady at a low speed, I start to get the lurching...What causes this? The car only has 26K on it and still is under warranty, so I can take it in. Was there a recall dealing with this issue?

EGR valve needs cleaning or replacing. If under warranty Honda will replace it, they did mine and that fixed it. After warranty you can take the EGR valve out and clean it for the same effect. The EGR valve is a bad design by Honda and should not have been used. All Insights will experience this problem when the EGR valve gets sooty inside.

1. How difficult is it to change/clean the EGR?
2 What does EGR stand for?
3. How often do you think I be changing/cleaning the EGR?

Since this car is under warranty I'll be bringing it in, but would like to know the above for the future reference...

I could help for two of the questions.

1- It is easy (if i remember correctly) you remove the rubber air intake tube from the air filter and engine plastic cover, remove the EGR valve (2 bolts). Apply 12 volts to the connector (Pin 4 is + and pin 6 is - . To identify, there are no pins for 5) and the valve opens. Clean.

2- Exhaust Gas Recirculation

3- Don't know. I did it once.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The Insight has an EGR "system" of which the EGR "valve" is one part... the basic purpose is to return unburned fuel in the exhaust back to be combusted again. For some reason it tends to get really messy/clogged/dirty in the Insight.

For a while I figured it was a 5spd/lean burn problem since CVTs don't have lean burn, but two posters here have now reported having a similar problem.

Many more than two with CVT's have posted about the EGR clogging up causing engine surging.

I think I have the same issue, but it only kicks in when regen does. And it only happens in cold weather. If i'm cruising and let up off the gas the car starts to buck, but only in colder weather. I had the problem last winter and it's starting up again. Is this the same thing?

im getting something similar.. but i think its just the CVT. while approaching a hill, i keep my foot still and usually the CVT will kick the rpm's up smoothly and try to keep my speed to what it was. now the RPMS jump up quickly and sometimes fall down again, then maybe 20 seconds later they will go back up. the mileage goes down with the RPM's going up too
are you getting something similar?
and sometimes when pushing the pedal from a stop, or even just letting myself creep, i get periods of no power. almost as if the CVT is absorbing all the engine power, or the "clutch" isnt letting everything connect

actually... i wonder if my running out of gas recently has anything to do with it. it seems to have gotten worse after that... hmmm
