Did I goof by buying this gas cap?

I discovered last week that my gas cap was no good when my car threw a CEL for P1456, and I saw my gas cap clearly had a crack in it.

Went to hondapartsnow and didn't want to pay 55 dollars for a new gas cap, so thought I'd just take the part # and try to source it elsewhere.

This part came in a honda genuine bag, but it's warped, missing the honda stamp, and looks nothing like the OEM gas cap I have with my car.

clearly I'm going to return this gas cap, but my concern is if I should just ask for another part, or a refund and try to get it elsewhere, I'd prefer for my new part to look the same as my old one.

E-testing showed the gas cap on mine was "leaking." They gave me a new one. I'm sure it's the cheapest, generic cap you could buy. Worked okay.
I've been using a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 van gas cap since 2002 on our 2001 Insight (because it had a built in tether) and never a code, so I think you'll be just fine. As long as the cap fits and seals, that's all it takes

You could try replacing the rubber seal on your old gas cap and see if the code stays away.

Add that to the parts interchange list!
There's also this replacement gasket, seems to work fine.

boogetyboogety just here living in 2998 while all of us have been suffering for 23 years with the complete lack of a good way to hold the gas cap.

There was another thread where someone pointed out that there was a Honda part that was sold separately that would give you a place to rest the gas cap.

Wouldn't happen to have the part # out of curiosity would ya?

I think this is the route I'm gonna take, much as I'd like a new gas cap and all, if it's not OEM, I'd rather stay away from it, thanks for all the feedback guys.
I just bought mine today from Autozone.
Walk in. Walk out. New gas tank cap.
Maybe $10.

Had a persistent P1456 code and changed the gas tank cap with a generic from Autozone. The old one wasn't OEM anyways and the seal was cracked.
Finally yesterday the Evap system completed its testing cycle and there are no more issues.
It doesn't means that P1456 is only a gas cap issue but in my case it was just that.

We replaced our cap 10-15 yrs ago with one from O'Reillys when the original was left on the car roof at the gas station.... I think the only thing to look for is that the replacement is either vented or unvented, to match the original. Lightning, as we call her doesn't get driven much nowadays, being displaced by a Bolt EV, so on the rare occasion that we put gas in it, I pin the cap under the rear wiper blade. It might stay there long enough for me to see it in the mirror, longer than on the roof anyway.

So this was the route I took, because I'd rather keep as much as I can to be OEM.

Looks like this part is a good replacement for the seal, I've used it for 2 fill ups now, no code thrown.

Wow, you must drive a lot!

New IT job wont let me work remote days yet so I have to drive everyday into the office for now, an hour there, and an hour back. That's hopefully ending soon.

Yesterday I had to drive ~4-5 hours to see my younger brother graduate from college, last weekend I had to drive to see my nephew graduate highschool.

Just the graduation season giving me extra driving, I wanted to drive to LA for the long weekend, but decided driving to see my brother was enough driving for now.
