We've received confirmation that the '04 Civic Si and Insight models are wrapping up their run for the model year. The factories will stop accepting orders after the March allocation and final deliveries for both models are scheduled for May of '04.

What does this mean? Well, while we'd like to think they're clearing the way for a Type R model, it's probably more of a reflection of the Si's slow selling rate. It is not uncommon for low production models (such as the Insight and Si) to have early "build outs".

Another item of interest for fans of the Si is that dealers have been told that the next generation Civic Si will be offered in a 2-door (coupe) body style once again, with "improved peformance".



I'm hoping what I'm reading here is that they are not going to produce any more 04 Insight's. It does not specifically say that they are ending the model, but it is not good news.

For awhile, I couldn't go a day without seeing variation of a Honda CRX either on the road or park somewhere. For a car that's almost 20 years old, it is still one of the more unique design around. While CRX didn't make it, Honda came back with the Insight years later, which to some, it's like an evolved CRX.

My point is, I think Honda, somehow, has been dedicated to the 2-seater, CRX-style for many years now, and I think we haven't seen the last of it.

The Insight may not be popular for many reasons, but one overlooked factor is probably timing. Since Truck and SUV sales are on the rise, it's natural to assume that environmentally friendly, 2-seater is not the current favorite. However, the younger crowd are now getting tired of the big SUVs and long muscle cars, and all the cars that appeal to them are the smaller, more agile sub-compacts. Just look at the success of MINI and Scion.

It's sad to admit it, but the current mode of the Insight won't be able to generate any more sales, thus it is going to have to stop production eventually. I just hope that Honda realized that, now, is a good time to launch the next generation of Insight, and jump onto the new wave of hybrid enthusiasm, generated by the 2004 Prius.
