Engine Problems

I have a 2001 Insight (5 speed manual) that went in for service on Oct of 05. The main battery pack went out and it took 3 weeks or so to replace. After getting the car back it sputters when driving at a constant speed. It feels like it is misfiring, even though that is not the case. After taking the head mechanic on a test drive, they hooked it up and found nothing wrong. With no lights and no problem codes, as far as they are concerned, there is nothing wrong. One possible problem they suggested is that I don't drive my car 'hard enough' and there is a carbon build-up, which is my fault. Ok... so the manual and all the fancy computer components and lights that tell you how to best drive your vehicle are wrong??? Anyway... I digress. Has anyone had a similar problem and, if so, what was the issue? Possible suggestions (oxygenated gas, wrong oil, etc) would also be very helpful.

Thanks all,

Michael

Wasn't there someone else here that had the same symptoms and it wound up being a cracked coil?

Seems that one of the cylinder's coil is directly above the exhaust manifold and the heat killed it.

Just an idea for troubleshooting.

That was one Don. :)

We've also had a case of loose spark plugs and multiple cases of sticky EGR valves and Primary O2 sensor failures.

Better get it checked out RockRat. Misfires can do damage to the CATs ($$$$)

Thanks so much everyone. I was so frustrated with the Honda dealership here in Vegas and the 2 in Los Angeles, that I was done with Honda. After they told me that no light means no problem with the car, I pulled into a VW dealership to find out what they would give me for my insight and what a golf would cost me.

I did call the corporate office to ask for help. The guy on the phone was disinterested, but opened up a file for me. I'm suppose to get a call from someone about it next week... I'm going to log all of this and pass it on to them when they call.

I'll keep you all posted.

Good luck with Honda when you don't have a CEL light (or even if you do). Best be is to get a skilled mechanic to check the following:

-Clean EGR valve. This is a very common problem and leads to the symptoms you describe. Lots of info on this forum if you search. :)

-Replace LAF sensor. There's no real troubleshooting for it, but it can cause exactly this behaviour if it is reading just slightly off (not enough to light a CEL). They're about $250.
