Posting Pictures F.A.Q. Sheet
Author: benjamin
Moderator Comments: For further information please refer to our Help Section.

------------------------------------------------------------

The question of how to add images to a post has been asked and answered so frequently in the last month, we decided to post a brief tutorial. Please also remember that answers to this and many other forum usage questions can be found in our Help Section, in the post entitled "Registration and Posting F.A.Q."

How to Add an Image to Your Post

1. First, please remember our three rules: only add an image directly in a post using the following method when the image is directly Insight-related; otherwise, post a link to the image instead; all images should not exceed the maximum size of 450x450 pixels (6.25"x6.25").

2. If you have determined your image meets the above criteria, you will need to post your image somewhere on the Internet. This will allow you to bring it into your post, here on the InsightCentral.net Forum. There are many free photo-hosting web sites. Choose one of them and follow the site's instructions to upload your photos.

3. Start writing your new post here on the InsightCentral.net Forum (or click the "edit" button next to a current post to add images to it).

4. When you reach the point in your post where you want to add your image, click once on the "Img" button (above the post writing area).

5. You then need to add the address (URL) of your image. For example, if you uploaded your photo to a web site called example.com, your image's address might be http://www.example.com/community/myphoto.jpg If that were the case, you would type in the entire address (or copy and paste the URL from the site hosting your photo).

6. Once you have typed the photo's address, click the "Img" button once more.

You should be set to go! When you submit your post, the image should appear right in the message. If you experience difficulties, need more help or have any questions, please contact one of the moderators.

I tried a few times to post a picture, using a link for my dropbox folder - like this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ux5r5zhj8jqawog/IMG_0014.jpg?dl=0
But it never works.
In the first post in this section it says:

Moderator Comments: For further information please refer to our Help Section.

But clicking on the link goes nowhere.
I also tried substituting my link into text from other posts which had successfully posted pictures. No good. So I guess there is something about DropBox which the site doesn't like?

Not familiar with dropbox but I use fototime.com. It automatically generates the correct link to post a photo in a forum so you can just copy and paste it into a message. Some internet forums let you upload a picture directly from your computer but for some reason this one doesn't. Unfortunately the issue with that is once you delete the picture from your photo host, it also disappears from your message. So if someone doing a search years from now finds your message, the picture will be blank.

I ought to have put my dropbox link in to my note, in case it is suddenly working: So here it should be:

This time I used the icon method - I *think* I just typed it in last time. Let's see if it works!

Still trying to post a picture...

Seems like not!

But now I've uploaded the picture in question into an album on this site...

Heaven knows how I get to show it in a post?

Dropbox instructions:

Resize image to 1024 max pixel width.

Place the JPG in your dropbox Public folder. Right click the file. Left click "copy public link", and you will get a direct link to the jpg file that you can post as an inline image.

Hi Keith,

I discover that the small picture file is actually 1280 pixels wide. Is that the problem? (it is only 303kB) I thought they were automatically shrunk if necessary?

Place the JPG in your dropbox Public folder. Right click the file. Left click "copy public link", and you will get a direct link to the jpg file that you can post as an inline image.
That is exactly what I did (excepting that, on an old Macintosh I have no 'right-click' so I use ctrl-click, which has the same effect). It was the proffered DropBox link which I incorporated.

Is size so crucial?

Size can impact readability for others. It's probably not the issue; however, you don't want to post something too wide as different browsers behave differently.

I'm forced to use a Mac at work, and it behaves as I described. The link you posted includes a "dl=0" at the end of the link, which suggests you did something different. If you are using Safari, that could be an issue. I have found Safari intolerable compared to Chrome.

The philosophy of trying to make the best of one's situation has prevented a self-inflicted kick to the nuts with my forced Mac use. Sorry I couldn't help. Good luck.

i'll check that if I can find no other way, but it is quite a faff to have to resize every photo before posting it, and many of the pictures on the site claim to have been resized.

I long since gave up on Safari - later versions no longer work with my Mac beacause I refuse to update its software ('cos e.g. I'd have to give up Eudora). I use Firefox fwiw.

I'll do a fresh link (under this line), but with the last few characters removed:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ux5r5zhj8jqawog/IMG_0014.jpg

Looks as though the link, as a link, works just as well without the characters after 'jpg' as you indicate. But the site doesn't open it!

For good measure, here is one with the image shrunken to 1024 x 768 (it is not visible in the Preview):

I'm sure you do a great deal better with a Mac than I do with a PC!

What is the purpose of the album to which I was easily able to upload the image, but which I seem not to be able to use as an alternative 'source' for it?

Thanks for the input - I'll keep persisting for a while!

I took the URL you provided and tried to paste into my message. No image appeared, and entering the URL directly into a new browser window caused dropbox to return a 500 error. You have a Dropbox issue. Not sure what it might be.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your efforts!

I did just the same, and both the long version (ending ?dl=0) and the short (ending .jpg) gave me the picture! It presented, in both cases, as an image filling most of the window, but with a download button, and an invitation to add comments. I guess that must be the issue?

Any one have a solution? E.g. somehow referencing it from my forum album?

Best, T.

Ok. I got the link but still cannot figure out how to put the photo in the post.

Here is how I add images to posts. I use Picasa to host pictures, so the actual details will vary depending on your photo hosting service/site.

Upload the picture to your host and get the link to the photo. Look for an option like Image Only, no link (Picasa version shown).

Copy the entire line of the URL to the image. In Picasa it is on the Embed Image line. If your photo hosting service has an option for size, select something reasonable. Some folks on IC have trouble with large photos in posts.

Either reply to an existing post or start a new thread and compose your post.

Click on the "mountain and sun" button (the Insert Image button).

Paste the URL from the step above. Click OK.

You will get some HTML code in your post that starts with

Use Preview Post to confirm your photo(s) and text look right before posting.

I hope this helps.

Davenm,

Very helpful instructions. I will try it from my Mac. Using an iPad right now and Picasa app does not have the picture only feature. Will see tomorrow. Thanks again.

+++++++++

Went to my picas page on my mac browser. It does not have an option for image only. Infant, the "share" function is greyed out. Dang. Thanks anyway.

Hi atikovi,

If you plan on post many photos, especially on sites like Ebay, I would join a proper photo hosting site.
I've long had an account with Flickr, but pictures on Flickr don't seem to work either.

Actually the new Mac OS and its beastly new photo app doesn't seem to be able to post there anyway...

I found a work-around!

But it doesn't work. If any one takes pity, I used the 'Insert Image' icon and copied the web address of the photo I'd like to show.

Was that wrong?

Or does the site not work with Flickr (I've failed with this before).

Or...

Here is the link I inserted in the 'Insert Image' process:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tj-in-ny/25406706892/in/dateposted-public/

I tried again with a different version of the Flickr address:

But that didn't work either. It was:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tj-in-ny/25406706892/in/dateposted-public/lightbox/

[/url]IMG_0440 by Tony Jackson, on Flickr[/IMG]

At last! Turned out I needed to use a 'BBCode', which produces a much longer link - but it works!

Sorry it took so long - I hope it may help some one!

Best regards, T.
