I finally purchased my dream car. I've been drooling over the Insight for three years now and finally got the finances under control to buy one (two kids + credit card crazy = bad combo). I called the dealer two weeks ago to see about getting an Insight (Victory Honda, Monroe, MI). The sales guy said that they were getting a silver 2003 in at the end of the month and he would call me when he got it so I could come in for a test drive.

Well, last week I was in Monroe to take my wife to the E.R. (She's fine, just a cut on her head from a falling picture frame). As we were leaving the hospital, I got a call on my cell from the dealer, someone had just traded in a Monte Carlo Blue 2001 that morning! Well, I rushed us over there for a test drive. This car was really cared for well, needless to say, I drove off the lot the same afternoon. It has about 42500 miles on it and lifetime average MPG of 49, so I've got some making up to do on that :). I did as everyone suggests and checked the tire pressure and of course, all four were under-inflated. Filled 'em to the 40/38 and we'll see if that helps.

I LOVE THIS CAR! :D It's just a blast to drive and try keeping the MPG up. I'm having the usual second thoughts as with any big purchase, did I get the right car, etc. I'm thinking I should've went with the Civic (we have two kids) but I was coming from a Ford Probe, so the kids barely fit in that anyway  .

I just found the previous owner's registration and it has it classified as STA WGN, station wagon... I never thought I'd hear of a 2 seater station wagon that got 70MPG LOL. So, my question to you is: what is your car classified as on your vehicle registration?

Thanks!

An Insight is your idea of a dream car? Well I like mine but, it's not my dream car. How much did you pay for an Insight with 42500 miles? It couldn't be to much. Mine is registered as a 2 door auto. Didn't know some states registered as station wagons. Does that mean your registration is cheaper? But it sounds like a mistake because the car is definately not a station wagon.

I think the Insight makes a damn fine dream car.
Been dreaming about mine for two years, and just got it 3 weeks ago.

What can I say, I'm a geek. I should've said my dream production car, I'd much rather have one of those fuel cell fly-by-wire concepts (and the infrastructure to fuel it).

Probably too much so I won't say. I will say, not the 13,000 that I saw on autotrader about 200 miles away.

Congrats on your purchase of the Insight!

Must be a mistake on the registration. Mine is listed as a 2-door hatchback.

Glad you feed the Insight is your dream car. It should be THE DREAM because if the world is full of them, the world would be better off!

I'm not sure what my dream car would be but my Insight is very close to it and there is nothing else right now I would trade it for. As far as registration, mine is listed as a 3 door.

Well almost got my dream car. :) I wanted a 5spd Insight but everywhere I went only had CVT. :? Only reason I jumped on the CVT cause it was under 15K new.

Interesting that an Insight is your dream car, but nevertheless, congrats on the purchase. I so wish I was able to grab a blue one instead of the silver. Looks much better. Guess it doesn't matter since there's a paint job in the future...Anyway, you will find that with a little practice, you should get that 49 MPG up to around 65 quite easily. Odds are the previous owner was a rather inefficient driver. Just try to keep it in lean burn, coast instead of brake, and accellerate at a reasonable rate...

BTW, for the record my dream car is the DeLorean DMC-12.

When I got my 2000 Insight (one of the first in Charlottesville, VA), I thought it was my dream car, only maybe instead of silver, maybe I should have gotten red.

Well, a Toyota Pathfinder tested the passenger protection cage of my almost-dream Insight. The cage passed the test, since my wife is unhurt, but the Insight sacrificed itself in the test. The Pathfinder's insurance paid me more than I expected and 2003 Insight cost less than I expected, so now I'm getting a new Insight.

Red. My new dream car. It's supposed to be in sometime next week.

Oh, and I kept my 1992 Civic hatchback when I bought the Insight. I kept telling people that it was my pickup truck. I used it on those rare times when I needed to carry a third or fourth person, or more cargo than the Insight would haul. Yesterday, I bought a 5x8 trailer for it. Now, it really DOES serve as a pickup truck. I can haul whole sheets of plywood or sheetrock, and put up to 3/4 ton in the trailer.

So, while pickup truck drivers haul around all that extra metal and get around 20mpg on a good day, my Civic gets about 40mpg and pollutes less and can haul more. It's my OTHER dream car.

Dream Car

It became my dream car after i bought miine used at CarMax for 6K under sticker new, with only 2,500 miles.

I love CarMax they were selling it for the same price as Buget Rent a Car was. Only mine didn't even have enough miles for the first oil change. I really robbed those guys!

The great thing about buying these things used is that back in 2001 when i bought mine, people under valued them in fear that they were too hard to sell.

Oh, the Insight is definitely my dream car: the only car I'd rather have is a Lotus Exige (track use only :( ). Also, I don't have that kind of money to spare. maybe in a few years....

You guys all seem to be getting these for really low prices. I posted this a while back, but how much do you think i should pay for a 2000, A/C with about 40K miles? Good condition.

Thanks.
