Good Morning all!

I've been lurking for a bit and finally got my white 2010 Insight EX this past Saturday. I've had it for 5 days so far and I'm already seeing the difference compared to my previous car, the Kia Soul. My commute to work is around 48 miles one way so I'm averaging around 100 mile round trips.:!:

It is crazy how this car makes you notice things more. The road, your speed, your conditions. You really become a more detail oriented driver. I am just NOW noticing how "HILLY" my drive is to work.

I am currently doing around 51-56 MPG highway on the insight but I've been stuck around 51mpg and I'm really interested in increasing that to get the most out of the car.

I am wondering if anyone has any techniques to offer me in regards to using the IMA to my advantage. I'm trying different things everyday but would appreciate all the help I can get.

The IMA system uses a small 13 hp electric motor to aide the gasoline engine. Battery capacity and electric motor are so small that the effective mpg benefit of the system is to extensively extend your coasting distance.

While coasting, gasoline flow to the engine is stopped, and mpg soars to an indicated 150 mpg. I use the energy flow screen and a light touch on the gas pedal to darken the gas icon while showing a positive flow from the battery to the car icon ( " EV Mode").

All those hills which you've become aware of can now become resources for battery charging on the down grade (lightly tap the brake pedal without slowing the car concurrent with the ASST gauge's movement toward CHG). Flat areas prior to upgrades become places to build enough momentum to get ya to the top without use / minimum use of ASST. Down grades are also great opportunities to build vehicle speed.

Check out actual Insight mpg numbers at Honda Insight MPG Reports | Fuelly. Join the site post your numbers, make some entry's in "notes", periodicly review your notes to see what is working, and what isn't.

Cobb as well as others at this site have done a lot with mods.

Welcome aboard. How many miles on your car? The mpg doesnt really start til at least 10 thousand miles. Til then all the eco and hyper driving techniques will help you a lot. I jokingly tell people the biggest improvement in mpg is adjusting the nut behind the steering wheel. That and using your side wall psi for your tires, blocking half your grill, lowering your car a few inches, sticking to routes with speed limits close to 45 mph as well as few of stops as possible.

For hills, you best bet is to drive like a semi truck. Let the car slow up going up and speed up going down.

LoL I just posted about this as well. I live in Miami too and find my commute to be very "hilly" which affects my MPG. Do you take 95?? You're averaging 51mpg real world MPG or thats what the MID says?? I'm getting 38-40MPG and I'm convinced somethings wrong with my Insight. I drive it conservatively, always on ECON and typically slower than 90% of Miami drivers. What am I doing wrong?? Can the IMA system be "tweaked" for better performance???

The IMA cannot be tweaked as far as I know. ECON mode does not always help either. Try driving with ECON off and see your mpg difference. I can achieve similar or higher with ECON off then ECON on due to the throttle response, the way it changes the braking, AC, etc. It really depends on how you drive, weather, and road.

The most important thing about MPG is to keeps the rev's down. Keep the rev's below 2,000 RPM, even under acceleration and you will see a huge increase in MPG. You will easily exceed 50 MPG if you do that

Coasting is also important. Time your accelerations carefully and make time coast once you see a yellow light and your sure you won't be able to pass it in time.

How you drive is the most important. Yeah, tire PSI matters but not to as much of an extent
