I have read all the hot-air mods that I could find, and I have never seen this mentioned that I recall.

I received my aluminum flex tube for my upcoming hot air mod, so I was looking more carefully in my engine compartment.

I was a little surprised to see a "T" in the existing air intake (in the U-shaped hose). The obvious part of the T goes from driver side to passenger side along the top front of the engine compartment. We all know this one.

But coming out of the bottom of the intake, there is a branch that seems to head down to the driver's side wheel well area.

What is the point/purpose of this second branch of the air intake? What do you hot-air modders do with it?

In this picture of Insightful Trekker's mod, you can see the southbound pipe, and it seems to still be attached, so what affect is it having on this hot-air mod?

Here you can see it

no idea... did you follow it to see where it goes? I just ignored it when I installed mine, and the car runs fine. If it is connected to something important, it can still draw air from the front of the car even if you disconnect the tube from the filter box.

I followed it as far as I could from the top, and I didn't have the time available to jack it up and look from the bottom, so all I can tell you is that it heads toward the wheel well.

When you say you ignored it, do you mean you left it in place, or disconnected it?

OHHH, it's just some kind of dead air space to do something like "even out" the "pulse" of air pressure due to the individual cylinders inaking vacuum? So there's no opening to the atmosphere down there I take it.

Hmm, I was going to route my hot air intake toward the rear, and then behind the engine over to the first cat by rotating the U-shaped intake hose....I wonder if this will keep me from doing that.

The front door seems to have quite a bit of brush and brambles, too :)

And of course I am familiar with your pages since I linked to one of your photos above, thank you for having them. And your link is "oh so clickable", don't be a showoff!
