Bought a used cvt core with under 200k miles to improve on my 430k one that’s beyond noisy and DOA. The new core had lots of black oily dust on the front. Didn’t make any sense, until I found the trans fill plug seal ring hidden in dirt down below. Light leakage of fluid over time surely contributed to failure.

A core is one you return after installing a rebuilt part and assumed to be defective itself. What do you expect to gain by installing this one?

It came out of a 160k car, yard called it a core for legal. (It’s more likely to be saveable than my 430k very toasted one.) The new ‘core’ still has its original cvt filter, and pan was quite clean, a little on the magnets. Excellent flywheel, rubber seal ring still intact. Some bearing noise, but it’s tight. Hopefully it wasn’t run too long with low fluid. It cost $200 including flywheel, a gamble yes but not a high $$ one.
