I am getting my 2000 Honda Insight ready for a car show, and just wondered how many of these cute little cars are still running around. Would love to hear your odometer reading and lifetime MPG.
My odometer reads 239658, with lifetime MPG 62.7. Thanks.

I have three. Would have to go out and look at mpg: 2000 manual 238k? Maybe more with 63.5 lmpg 2002 cvt 220k 56lmpg and my blue that is manual I haven’t driven yet with 113k miles.

I have two, the first of which I've had since 2012.

Insight 1: 270,000. The engine is swapped for an Acura TSX engine and I've been averaging mid 40's since I did that. Prior to the swap my lifetime was ~67mpg.
Insight 2: 276,000, 65mpg

I bought my 2000 Insight in 2007, with only 24,954 miles on the odometer at that time. At that time, the lifetime fuel economy was 61.1 mpg. Now, I have 258,518 miles on the odometer. The lifetime fuel economy number is 73.3 mpg. That means that ever since I purchased it, I have put on 233,564 miles, averaging 74.6mpg.

A few years back now, there was an article that stated around 60% of them were still registered, which put the number still on the road at around 8500.

I wouldn't doubt that has dwindled to something like 7000 now, maybe even less. A lot of people seem to be junking perfectly good(as in, not smashed) specimens, just due to their low book value.....

2002 MT with 190k miles and 57.5 lifetime MPG. Daily Driver. My driving has not been particularly kind to the MPG, I live in a high elevation city near the mountains and have to hammer on it pretty hard to keep up with traffic.

My 2000 has ~162k with lifetime 87.6mpg since I bought it. It is my first Insight, a clunker too. It's been side swiped, it creaks, the hood rattles, AC compressor is loud when it's on. Yet I still love the car! Wouldn't trade for anything else.

I recently picked up a 2nd. A 2001 with 243k miles when the engine overheated and blew up. Lifetime mpg is around 48. No idea if it's ever been reset. This car is getting a k24a4 swap soon.

My silver ‘02 is around 268,000 miles. The lifetime is about 54.3 lmpg.

When I bought my 2000 Insight two years ago, it had 198,000 miles and a 56.4 lifetime MPG. Now it's got about 216,000 miles and a (reset) lifetime of around 63 MPG. I'm hoping for a million miles and 100 MPG! Yeah, I'll hit a million miles in 87 years at the rate I'm collecting miles. :)

I have another 2000 Insight with similar numbers, but it's not currently roadworthy. I think it's 234,000 and 54 MPG. It will someday come back to life!

And I just did some repairs on a friend's 2002 Insight CVT. 206,000 and 46 MPG on that one.

Wow, that's far lower than I expected. That's the number commonly quoted as how many DeLoreans are left. That puts it in a whole new light for me.

To answer the topic question though, my 2000 has 227k miles at 57.2 lifetime MPG! Up from 52.7 @ 127k when I first got it in 2012.

One compounding factor is that many of us own two or more G1s... since we can only drive one at a time, that lowers the likelihood of every seeing one on the road even more. At one point Gerald owned something like 30 G1 insights... he's an extreme outlier, but many of us own three or four G1s at any given time.

In my 18 months driving around the US in a van (2015-2016), I only saw one G1 Honda Insight "in the wild." This of course doesn't include stopping by InsightFest in Madison, WI... those are "captive" G1s ;).

I've seen two other G1s in Chattanooga. One of them was broken down (bad ground straps) on the side of the road. The driver couldn't comprehend how I immediately knew what was wrong, why I had the correct tool to replace the part (10 mm wrench), and her head pretty much exploded when I grabbed the exact replacement part and bolted it into her engine bay. That was a really fun "white night" repair ;).

Mine is kind of still around; it is in dry storage (before covid but also covid changed some things); silver manual (2003?2005?); awesome car; the earth straps were made of dust but low kms; the main issue is that the IMA failed about 100km into my ownership, while driving north! The previous owner installed a grid charger which is still there, also I got the previous battery in a box.

Having just rebuild a Gen 1 Prius battery with Gen2/3 parts it is probably time to build a ‘half-battery’ with Prius prismatic cells. My only real worry with the car is it is so rare; if someone crashes into me etc - I may never be able to replace it😰

However it will make a return to the roads soon :)
