Does anyone have a good guess as to how much Honda's out-of-pocket production/shipping loss is for a new battery pack/MCM/BCM (not including labor--which they usually charge anyway) when Honda replaces it out of warranty? I'm curious as to bargaining power if...any probably when...my 2000's battery pack finally goes out. Markup has to be considerable--but there are other factors to consider other than production, such as paying for the reseach and technology in developing it as well. I have coverage until August 2007, and for the 1st time ever I am hoping for something to do wrong with one of my cars. That's the problem with buying a Honda and taking very good care of it. It won't break when I want it to lol

I would be surprised if Honda made any significant profit from selling battery packs because it's in their best interest not to scare people from Hybrid technology with high priced replacement batteries. But i'm sure the dealer makes a decent profit from it.

I do not believe that the dealer makes anything on the pack as it is provided by Honda. The dealer may get a standard rate for the installation from Honda.

There has been some discussion as to whether the replacement packs are new or refurbished. Considering the current shortage of Nmh batteries (due to licensing and a shortfall of cobalt production), I suspect that they are refurbished. At least one of the members has refurbished his own pack. The experience indicated that only some of the cells were sub standard. The replacement packs have only a short warranty period.

I conclude that it is best to take care of the pack by driving sensibly and not beating up on it when the temperature inside the car is either really hot or really cold. The cost of the packs is coming down. Ultimately there will be aftermaket packs and shops that refurbish them.

Unless your pack is showing signs of weakness, relax for the sake of your health and enjoy the ride. :D
