I saw an Insight at.....

A thread for Insight spotters. From time to time we see Insights when we least expect them. I thought perhaps a thread full of only these encounters would be fun.. I'll start:

I saw an Insight in Fort Benton Montana Monday June 26th about 11 am. Folks, Fort Benton is a small, small town on the Missouri River. I was there to take a canoe trip down the river. I'm all ready to go when I see a silver Insight...WITH TEXAS PLATES. So I'm walking down the street in my PFD trying to catch the Insight, lol they read a little about Lewis and Clark and pulled away. Just about the last place I ever thought I would see an Insight.

Taking mine to the Honda dealer for an “official” oil change today. I usually do my own maintenance, but kind of interested to see what they have to say about all these Insights, plus adding another data point to the CarFax for this vehicle.
Careful about that. I've heard that shops have a tendency to strip the magnesium oil pan, which is a bit pricey to replace and why most Insight owners recommend doing your own oil change (which is really quite easy on this car). Plus it's a bit cheaper too. ;)
What he said. Tell ‘me to take it easy on the plug. I always mention it so, if it’s stripped, I have a chance at repair/replace.

Also, before you drive off, be sure they put in the correct amount of oil. Sometimes they think it’s a regular 4 and add a couple quarts extra!
Good time to get that Fumoto valve put in to replace the drain plug. Some 1/2-3/8 tubing attached to the Fumoto and you can drop your oil without removing the undebelly pan.

My oil change actually got delayed until next Friday. I was planning on reminding the dealer about the delicate drain plug anyway - assuming that if they break it, they fix it.

Part of the point of going to the dealer is to strike up a conversation about all the Insights in La Crosse. The other part is, my garage floor is an inch deep in water from spring flooding right now, and the garage is hovering around freezing. Not a great environment for self-maintenance. :^)

When I do the next oil change, I’ll install the Fumoto valve.

Thanks,

Park
I will bet serious money the dealership won't know d¡ck about your Insight. So here's what you should do:

Tell them the pan is magnesium and expensive as hell, and to treat it accordingly. Put it on the original work order in writing. Some goober is going to tighten the nut by hanging off the bar if you don't, and find himself sprawled on the floor with oil dropping down on his goober face from a stripped oil pan otherwise.

Insist they return three of the needed Honda 0-20 oil containers to you, two of them empty, and one with just less than half the oil remaining. Otherwise, they will fill your car with whatever pumps out of their oil change barrel, and overfill it by at least two quarts.

Tell them to leave your damned tires alone and not to drop the pressure to 32 pounds or whatever they think is right: You should be running 45-50 pounds in your Potenzas. Dealerships think they're doing you a favor by checking and "adjusting" your air pressure... They're not.

And have them put the old oil filter in a zip lock baggie so you can compare it to the one they put on the car when you get to the house. That one is optional, but it hammers down the point you're serious about the oil change being done right.

Before you leave the premises: Have someone pop the hood right there and then, and measure the oil level in front of you. Because after all that, it may still be wrong, and now's the time to find out.

Repeat every time you have some dealer goobers touch your car. Trust me on this. And yes, get a Fumoto, so you won't have to deal with goobers...

I saw an Insight . . .

Driving south on California 1 in Big Sur. Parked on the west side of the road, silver. Did not stop. Big Sur is still beautiful beyond words.
Northbound Wilson at Glebe in Arlington, VA, a silver with some bumper stickers on the back, 5:39pm, yesterday afternoon. We were having some fabulous seafood at Mussel Bar & Grille when I spotted it, so no way to interact with the driver...
Well, didn’t see one, but got spotted in South Charleston, WV, in Kroger’s, wearing one of Freezin4’s t-shirts! Evidently the fellow recognized the car as one that a church music directed had for many years!

So John, have you figured out how many Insights there are in San Antonio yet??
Ha! Jim! No, don’t have a final count for you, but I see one occasionally! I HAVE to think there are a few up in Austin. I’ve got to put together a small gathering. I miss our coffee meetups!
I will bet serious money the dealership won't know (anything) about your Insight.
You would have lost that money. While I have a healthy skepticism about dealers in general, Honda Motorwerks in La Crosse, WI is one of the good ‘uns. I have previous experience with them on two other cars, plus they have a mint Honda 600 parked on the showroom floor.

As I expected, they know Insights well (I’ve seen five in the local area). They have all the major maintenance records on this one going back to 2006 and were happy to see it again after a year or two gap.

The oil was perfectly on the full mark on the dipstick when I got it back, and they gave the car a full inspection for free. The only issue was worn front brakes and rotors (at 250k, no shock).

They quoted a reasonable price for the brake repair, but I’m ordering the parts to do it myself. Also ordering the Fumoto valve and will do future oil changes myself.

Drove 150 miles on the interstate the next day and averaged 62.9 without any real effort. Great car.

I swear I just saw a space alien green gen 1 on hiway 56 headed west through Baldwin City KS.
Red Insight

We saw a red Insight on Main Street in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin. It had Utah plates. ?
Yesterday I saw a red G1 in Elmsford NY, looked like it was about to turn onto I287.
Any red Insights in SW Michigan?

My dad sent me this picture of a red Insight at his dealership in Holland, MI.

No, it's not me. I'm still down in Virginia for another week finishing up the semester.

Is this anybody on here?

Lacrosse huh.... I'm just south of Tomah. I saw a Citrus Insight in Viroqua last Thursday 4/25 with a ton of bumper stickers covering the back end. I'm guessing whoever owns it is an enthusiast and on IC, but I could be wrong.
Red G1 with no window tint heading east between exit 84 and 87 today on Eye 24 from Nashville to Chattanooga.
2 days in a row!

Thursday May 2, I saw my second different G1 on consecutive days. Hwy 41A that parallels Eye 24 between exit 87 and 97 heading towards Chattanooga from Nashville. I was in my Red G1 heading the opposite direction and Gray G1 was behind another car. Yesterday, I saw a Red G1 in about same area except on Eye 24. These are the first ones I have seen in the past two years commuting in this area.
Eastbound Spring Creek at Central Expressway, Plano, just shy of 11am today, a very, very dirty silver Insight with a missing right rear spat... :(
About once a month I see a blue one going south on State Hwy83 just south of i-94 in Delafield Wisconsin. We must have similar commutes.

(sorry if it sounds like a Craig's List persona;...IT'S NOT!)
