Hi, I have a 2000 Honda Insight (1st Gen) -- while driving, and my BATT gauge showed full, it suddenly plunged to 3 bars only, all within a 1/2 mile. Car kept running, CHRG gauge came on, ASSIST gauge working, and charging added ONE bar to 3 during next 1 mile. I made it home at 4 bars live on BATT gauge.

Why did this IMA charge suddenly plunge? NO warning dash lights came on, including the IMA light. Thanks for answer.

This is the car doing a Negative Recalculation (Recal). It lost track of the state of the battery and had to recalculate. Look it up. If you keep driving it will go back up to the top. An IMA light is probably in your future. Time for a grid charge.

Welcome to the forum. You've got a -lot- of reading to do to catch up. ;)

If you go to my website and read the "Background" paragraph in the DIY V2 grid charger article you can save a lot of forum searching for the basic details of the IMA battery and what caused the negative recalibration you had.

You can also build yourself a simple (and cheap) grid charger/discharger with the info in that article.

Thank you for your answer, Sam. I never heard of a negative recalculation! And I suspected grid charger time is nigh....

^ You shouldn't need to do anything special. Just drive and the pack should charge-up at least partially on its own. If there's a problem with the pack you'll get an IMA light before it finishes its charging thing. Then you can start thinking about what else you might need to do...
