Hello All,

This first post is just a background, the next one has my questions.

At the end of 2014, being that I desperately wanted an Insight I ended up settling on a 2001 CVT, and soon after the CVT crapped out. Dealer wanted over $3k and every mechanic locally said I was better letting the dealer handle it. So instead I bought a Volt, then a guy ran a red light, and I had to say goodbye Volt. Thought I'd try another Insight, all the good ones in the SF Bay Area were over priced, so I checked craigslist ads in neighboring states and found one in Oregon for the half the price. It was in excellent mechanical shape, but it did have damage to the rear drivers quarter. I ended up catching the first flight out of SFO to PDX sometime in November 2015.

The car lived up to the ad so we drove to the DMV, exchanged cash and title, and went about our ways. From there I had the oil changed, stopped at McDonalds, got gas(which I didn't pump), made a few wrong turns then drove straight back home. I did stop somewhere for gas but I was impressed with the gas mileage.

Four months of driving the car over 200 miles daily as a courier, and things started to malfunction on this 15 year old car. The battery would charge and discharge sporadically, which meant immediate losses and gains in power. Then a couple months later, the brake and battery lights would come and go. The car would be fine for 3 weeks then the battery light would come on for a week and I'd end up getting stranded because my 12-volt would crap out. All of this was an experience or the IMA learning curve.

All-in-all this interfered with work, so my boss cut my work load which meant I couldn't exactly make enough to fix the problem either. By fix I mean get a new battery from BumbleBee.

So now Im not working and I charge my 12-volt at home once a week or as needed. By taking bits from this site, along with my actual experiences, I've actually learned how to live with it, but now i need a fix.

Why, because a few months ago I decided I would try to take this car across the US or on a road trip thru Mexico and Central America, and possibly have it shipped to South America, but only if I can trust the car again.

Questions

What are the benefits of doing a BCM bypass with an Arduino over just doing a simple BCM disconnect?

Are the any mods or recommendations a person can make for taking the car in to South America(tires, suspension upgrades, etc.)?

Has anyone seen a roof rack or any sleeping configuration that would be somewhat reasonable for a person around 6'2'' or am I SOL?

How hard is dent removal from the rear? A shop quoted me $400 to pull as much of the dent as possible then Bondo and paint the rear and my bumper.

I don't see any obvious trail of water but when it rains my seat belt ends up soaked which continues to baffle me, am I the only one?

Any one with a simple fix/repair for the maint'd req'd light that retired or an alternative reset method when the button doesn't work?

I think doing the Arduino thing just gets rid of the dash warning lights (IMA light, CEL) and underlying trouble codes triggering those lights... There could be more to it than that, though, not sure...

I don't know about South America in particular, but in general, a lot of people buy aftermarket springs from Scott at Jue Motors to stiffen-up the rear suspension...

I made a sleeping platform that fits in the hatch area; it can be taken apart in two pieces and stowed there, fairly unobtrusive. Mine is designed for my 5'11" height, but I think you can make the piece that wedges between the front seats a little longer than I did to help compensate for your extra 3 inches. No, you're not the only one. Many people complain about "wet seat belt" syndrome. If you search for 'wet seat belt' I'm sure you'll get a few hits...

There's a bunch of stuff about that around here, too. I don't know if there's a "simple" fix, though, or where things stand these days with that. If your button doesn't work for sure - like you can't reset the trip meters, ever - then you'd have to fix the button. Otherwise, it's possible you just have to keep trying to do the reset until it takes hold one of those iterations... With key OFF, hold trip button down, turn key ON, wait for maintenance light to go out, turn key OFF... Here's a thread about trip button repair, pretty old, search for 'trip button repair' or some such to find more info: http://www.insightcentral.net/forum...ems/21482-dash-reset-button-upgrade-gen1.html

For the broken trip buttons, get yourself 4 of these:

Tactile Pushbutton 6x6mm Momentary PCB Switch Button DIP - dipmicro electronics

Remove the dash trim piece and then pull out the instrument cluster. Open it up, there are two mini circuit boards, take those out. Remove the buttons Honda has in there and replace with the ones I linked you.

This is a more detailed guide, but the buttons linked in the guide are discontinued. Just use the ones I linked you, they're 3¢ each and the shipping is going to be only $4 I think.

You can skip the steering column drop if you want, but if you omit that step be VERY careful not to torque the dashboard plastic piece. I'm told that the black dome-like section that goes over the instrument cluster is very fragile and can break. It might be easier to just drop the column.

Oh, also you said your 12V battery is prone to dying. Here's the fix for that:
