I have looked at the pictures and at the car and I think it would be very cool to have the lower half of the dash from a JDM Insight. I would like to put a LCD screen in there and maybe convert it to a camera function. I was wondering if any of you know how to order the lower dash plastic? It appears the plastic is cut to about Double DIN size - how cool would that be?

Has anybody found a way to order JDM parts? like the car cover or anything?

Planejob - Check out my previous posts on the double din Sat Nav unit in my car, such as "Help needed from an electrical genius". In my previous posts I have included links to photos as well.

I currently have the dashboard panel removed from around the head unit while I try and figure out the wiring  and could tell you the part number for the piece of dashboard (assuming that the number is on the back). However this piece fits into the dashboard itself with about ten clips and two screws - you would need this part as well, which would then fit into another part and so on...Let me know if I can try and help :( .

There's just one problem with this. The Japanese Insight is right side drive, US's is left. The dash is essentially completely mirrored. That means the dash trim piece is backwards and would not just snap righ on to a US car. I have exercised this idea before, here's what you'd have to do to get it to work.

First obtain the japanese trim piece, which I have a feeling might end up running you a decent amount of money. Secondly you'd either have to use your existing trim piece or ideally go and buy another one. The black part and maybe some of the grey would have to be laser cut on both at some point where they would line up properly. If it was done well the two pieces could be molded and glued in to one that would look good. Laser cutting would probably be the only way to get it cut precisely enough so that you wouldn't see the cut.

From there you could probably use a navigation system out of some other Honda vehicle. See your local wrecking yard and start hunting. The brain of it would go in the dead shoe box space or maybe in the spare tire. It would be interesting, but I think it could be done. Also if you did this I'd recommend getting some dark tinting on your windows as there would be no way to hide the screen while parked.

You know I've seen a few Insights on eBay that had S2000 side marker lamps put on them. I like this idea too, but I don't like the fact that it probably entails drilling.

PlaneJob,

I've been working to do the exact same thing on my Insight, and gave up
long ago on finding the Japanese dash piece for same reason Rick suggested.
Instead, I purchased a replacement dash piece from my local dealership
and put together my own double din dash piece.
I used styrofoam and sandpaper to create an outline of what I was wanting, and duraglass/fiberglass did the rest.
I've spent last few months working on this in my spare time, and completed the dash piece about two weeks ago. A friend of mine is
stitching up some black vinyl that will be applied to my dash piece later
this week, at which time I can upload some pictures.

The radio I have installed in my Insight is an Eclipse 7301 double-din w/video, and I have used an i-mac-->to-->scan converter to display my
desktop in the imac.
I'm working on removing the logic board from the imac, and either building/modifying a power supply so that It can be permanently installed in the car.
My first goal is to have an iTunes jukebox, and then possibly GPS at a later date. (and of course, some war driving!)

First year I got my Insight, my Dad had the local audio-shop install a navigation unit in mine. It is a double-din DVD nav and it looks completely factory. I will take a pic of it when weather is better and post it here.
It looks great and works awesome except its out of date, doesnt know half of the new addresses, and no Bluetooth or iPod interface.
