Looks like some "sulfur tainted" gas got out. The thought is that it corroded fuel level sensors and caused incorrect readings in the fuel level.
This sounds a bit far fetched...sulfur on it's own isn't notoriously corrosive...nothing like chlorine for example. Although the gas company actually admitted to it and says it will "step up" to help motorists with repairs. I wonder if it was really sulfuric acid, or a close derivative...that's about the only thing I can see that would corrode a sensor to a completely inoperable state in such a short time.
